I asked Mike in a Ship John Live on Instagram about the sturdiness of the brim post soak. He said he soaked the brim of the test hat and that it “feels the same as the brand new one”.

But I know hats with cardboard brims could get ruined by soaking them. I did not ask what the brims are made out of.

@Danimal506 Good info! I agree...I've ruined hats before by getting the brim too wet. I'll probably play it safe and keep that dry.

I think the move toward the super high crown on trucker hats in the 70s/early 80s (which SJ models their hats after) was a function of wanting more space for printed advertising.

If I'm not mistaken @popvulture works in advertising so technically we can blame his people

Side note…wish the SJ hats had a leather adjustment strap instead of the plastic adjuster.

My hats landed today. Really nice…might prefer the broken twill one at first look. Gonna start with that one and give it a soak tomorrow.

Received the sashiko hat yesterday. Looked awesome until I tried to wear it. Did a soak, then let it air dry... still feel kind of ridiculous with the height. Attempting another soak today followed by a round in the dryer.... will report back if that helped or I ruined the hat.

The hat looks awesome, but I agree the height is ridiculous looking on me. My son just busts out laughing when i put it on. I'll be selling or returning.

Update: Well, good and bad news. Good news is the hat is undamaged from the dryer, and shows minimal fading. Bad news is that it still is extremely odd looking on me and sits very tall... ha I also have a giant noggin for reference here. So sadly for me, this one is a miss and I'll either be selling or using it while mowing the lawn to see if it gets better as it ages.

@Teejus option 2 just might get you to the sweet spot. Think the fabric relaxes once you give it some wear.
