If I were starting all over again and were looking for a sub $1k watch, I'd probably go with a MKII ready to wear model.
In fact, I may get a Hawkinge soon

I always thought it was ugly as all fuck, but must have been missing something because of it's cult following.

I absolutely will not buy a watch with cathedral hands, but the dial is a really pretty shade of green.

I was wrong, it was even more gross in person.

I was sooooo hoping that you would give some constructive criticisms, lol!

Aesthetically, as with most things in the world (Except Halle Berry), some folks love it and some folks hate it… I thought you would have possibly some performance issues to explain.

The movement is nice. I have another watch with the same movement and it’s more accurate than my omegas.

So it will accurately be ugly as fuck.

                Well, I've come full-circle…

First page of this thread, I mentioned Hamilton's being nice looking, and that's what I've just pulled the trigger on.

42mm Hamilton Khaki Field, model: H70555533.
                https://shop.hamiltonwatch.com/khaki-field-auto-42mm-h70555533.html

Found a great deal on it, it's a simple, clean, and versatile design, and from what I understand, the H-10 movement is better than the Alpinist's movement.

Also, my rubber NATO trap came in, and I'm super happy with it, aside from it smelling like a bicycle inner tube, lol!

After ordering, I got an email asking for my wrist measurement, and asking if I wanted enough slack to be able to fold back the tail through the links. After answering those questions, he made it to the length that would fit what I wanted, and I received it yesterday; only 5 days, including the weekend.

4hrs in to wearing it, and I'm super happy with it. The rubber is a genius idea! I can pull it less tight than my nylon NATO I was using before, and it fits more comfortably with less movement. I'll likely get one for my Hamilton.

After digging around and doing some more research, from what I can see, Seiko will be discontinuing a few of the more popular models (SARB017, SARB031, SARB033 to name a few), all of which were in the running to go in my "noob watch collection". This info has been floating around for months, but I guess I just hadn't noticed or paid attention. I cam across it last Friday as I was browsing the webs for an Alpinist, and started to notice that there aren't many places to have them in stock.

Deliberating if I should get a new one now, before the chance is gone forever…..

You definitely should get one if you are on the fence. I got a SARB35 for 318USD in June now they are selling for 450 and upwards with most of the places out of stock already.

It's cheap but dang this thing is comfortable. I can't even tell I'm wearing it.

I think it is more comfortable than my higher end Casio Pro Trek (which I use and beat up for work %90 of the time due to needing the barometric pressure gauge and stop watch often). And also find it more comfortable than my Seiko SRP775.

Is it normal to hear quiet clicking sounds when moving the watch occassionaly with Orient automatics??

People complain about the band but I've taken quite a shine to it.

I don't remember my Mako making any noteworthy noises, but as long as it's running well, it's probably normal.

I remember some of my watches with Miyota movements making a lot of noise, and the Valjoux 7750 is notorious for its winding sound (and wobble).  Part of the idiosyncratic nature of automatics, I guess.
