      @BloodnThunder:

      iPhone 8 screens are as slick as ice.  My office mailbox is located on a marina on Lake Union in Seattle.  This morning when grabbing the mail I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dropped it on the marina.  Phone then proceeded to slide right into the lake….  Was able to fish it out with a net.  Last time I don't buy Applecare.

      ouch  ???

      Holy cow - that's quite unfortunate…

      proceeds to chuckle maniacally

        I really couldn't do anything but laugh the situation was so ridiculous.  I could literally look down to the bottom and see my phone sitting there with the screen on.  Wish I got a picture but obviously didn't have a phone.

        I guess I was due.  I got my first cell phone going into college in 2004, yesterday was the first time I have ever had to prematurely replace a phone due to damage.  Every other time I've replaced a phone it was after a solid 3-5 years of use and was retired because it was fried.

          I got my first cell phone in 2000, and it is the only one I've ever broken.  I dropped it on a hardwood floor from about 2-3 feet, and initially, everything seemed fine.  It wasn't until the next day that I discovered the 7, 8, and 9 buttons had stopped working.  Doh!

              Thanks @ROman my MRI has been postponed while my health insurance company collects more info from my doctors. A hassle,  but it is what it is. Regardless, I’ve missed a week of work and tomorrow I have to work, even if I can’t drive myself there.  ???

                              While I can get onboard with most of what you’re saying, the bit I just quoted confuses me a little. Sci-fi is a broad church but a fairly constant theme is the exploration of contentious issues in contemporary society through a lens that is liberated from comtemporay mores. That is fascinating stuff and their are countless examples of sci-fi both predicting and elucidating societal and political developments and paradigm shifts. Of course if you’re thinking about Star Wars, then that’s another matter entirely as it isn’t really sci-fi.

                                    You got me. I’m on 2hrs sleep and on my phone so there’s my excuse. And I hope I didn’t imply that I have life “figured out” I was merely marveling at how many things people’s brain seem to do without their consent/will, etc. it often seems like the person didn’t really want to count stairs or be bothered by an angled snap logo. I guess I’m just not super bothered by these kinds of things, that’s not to say I don’t have quirks. Speaking of which…

                                    Different rant: why do so many companies call their derby shoe an Oxford? I mean you make shoes, or sell them, and the distinction is very clear. I’m definitely particular when it comes to rigor in terminology. Call it what it is! (To be clear I’m not bothered by either type of shoe, although I’d probably rather wear a derby)

                                      I was in hospital for a minor operation about a week ago.

                                      The girl in the pre-op ward to the right of me had an infection on a plate in her ankle. They were going to open her up and try to fix it.

                                      The guy in the bed opposite me looked like he was freshly missing his lower leg. 😞

                                      Like a lot of things, it could be worse.

                                      Get well soon @Matty123!
