      Thanks for the replies, everybody!
@gaseousclay, thanks for checking yours.  Sounds like this kind of thing probably won't make them fall apart as fast as I worried.  I get your bias.  Every Iron Heart jacket I own is just a solid work horse right out the box.
@Giles, I completely understand and respect your diplomacy.
@UnTucked, Get what you paid for point is noted.  I agree that the hefty price tag on these jackets is really all about the fabric itself.  I'm not even particularly a fan of type IIs, but the garment itself is only a vehicle for the enjoyment of craft in weave and dye.  That said, I do wish there was a little higher baseline standard of construction.  I do not receive your words as talking me down.
@Appfaff, Thanks for the advice and direction.

It is only fair that I positive-rant briefly that I did contact Okayama Denim and a person by the name of Merv is being extremely responsive and supportive in this issue.  I'm definitely going to send them back and either get replacements that have been double checked or a refund which I will thusly circulate back into something else.

@TaBLemann no problem. Fwiw, it never occured to me to check the stitching on my PBJ's when I bought them 1-1.5 yrs ago, but I never got the impression that they would fall apart on me. With that said, my PBJ type II's fit me kinda weird and that's probably the only criticism I have of them (and the lack of hand pockets), otherwise, I dig the fabric.

What the fuck is wrong with people?  😠 Our new living room furniture is delivered and put together tomorrow, so my writing/PC desk has to go (because my wife says the glass / aluminium combo does not fit the style of the new stuff). Since nobody wanted to buy the damn thing I put it up on eBay Kleinanzeigen for free if picked up.

So yesterday a guy writes me and after some conversation we agreed that he picks the table up at 18:00 today. Well that was almost two hours ago and he did not show up or even bothered to send a message that he can not make it.

It pisses me off, that most people seem to think that they can be unreliable or behave like assholes or both, just because you communicate over the internet. Fekking wankers.

Oh, and THIS is what happens when your wife thinks your old computer- / writingdesk does not fit into the „new“ livingroom.

You end up with a desk the size of a shoebox, that can barely fit a keyboard and a mouse. Damn it. 😞

^ same thing happened to me, mate. My computer desk is now even smaller than that. If I recall correctly my response was to buy a UHF. I felt much better.

I «had» to go and buy a kickass chair as well as a UHF when I got done like this. Big wide arm rests and a fold out tray for mouse and keyboard.

No, I'm not sure that solution will work, and there's a definite risk that it could lead to bankruptcy if your partner decides it's just what your home needs.

                                I hate coding tests.

The majority of Android development jobs in Australia have a programming task as a first or second round in the recruitment process. It normally conforms to the following:

                                • Write a basic Android app to connect to a remote server, download data, process it, and display it.

                                • There might be additional requirements, such as use a particular language, add a full test suite, store the data in a database, or make the UI look pretty.

                                • The client will tell you that it'll take two hours (the usual estimate), up to four or five. This is always a massive underestimate, as it's more likely to need several days to write from scratch.

Normally I use the requirement to do a coding test as a filter for a job. If someone wants it done, then I'm not interested because they're a massive waste of time (for me), and frequently companies don't actually respond when you complete it.

I'm currently doing one for a job here in Melbourne.

I didn't work much last year, and so my coding skills are rusty. On top of that, they insisted that the test is written in Kotlin, which is the new hotness in Android development, so I'm having to use an unfamiliar language.

So far I'm about ten hours in, with probably another five to ten to finish it. Plus I spent a couple of hours getting my development environment upgraded and set up.

I suffer from depression, and have a general lack of enthusiasm about doing things. Right now, this project is getting me down in a big way, and I'm close to emailing the client to say, "Feck off, this is a stupid fecking way of measuring programmer ability, and I'm not sure that I want to work for you as a result."

You know for them it's not personal, it's money as always.

I, as many others, got rejected a dozen times on the second stage because of the lack of skills. Apparently getting your BSc with honors is not good enough. Instead companies are searching for someone in his/her early 20's with at least BSc/MSc, and 15 years of experience in all programming languages. Including the newest languages.  ??? ::)
And they are still complaining how they can't get good personnel… Just because they don't want to invest any money in order for you to gain some experience.

Just play along with the game. If they don't offer you a chance it's their loss, not yours. There will be others who are going to recognize your skills.

@neph93 I made a bad call on which approach to use, and spent most of today debugging why it wasn't working, unsuccessfully.

Ironically, the approach I took would probably be the best way to build a production app, but for a quick and dirty coding demo, it's not.

I'm going to see how it goes, but I'm tempted to submit what I've done to date, and say no more.

@Cole the wooden slats in the photo of the desk (above) are about the size of a 34" monitor, so you've got no excuses. 😛

In general, I find that companies complaining about skill shortages (or a lack of good personnel) mean that there's a lack of people who're willing to work for the wages they're offering. 😃
