I won't allow this to be classified as a "First World Problem".

While living on a ship, you're allowed to complain about anything you'd like.

Fair winds and following seas, Chief!

here's my first world problem. do I buy:

                          PS4 slim

                          or

SEXIH07IIIBK modified od type3 from Self Edge?

Of course, I want both but arguments could be made for either. The PS4 would be nice to have for those days when I don't have my son with me, and it's been a long time since i've had a new console. The downside is that I don't want my son asking me what it is and getting sucked into video games at his age (he's 4.5 yo).

Likewise, i've been wanting a modified od type3 since I saw the bsp 14oz version at SE but their new 18oz od type3 looks amazing. The downside to the SEXIH07IIIBK is that I wouldn't be able to wear it for 3-4 months.

Tough one.  I would probably go with the jacket.

@seul Yup. that's about how I feel right now. After our last port call it took me a few days to dry out though.

One thing that's nice is that I usually have internet access though because of my rank. I guess somebody thinks I'm important. I've got those tossers fooled, but I'm not saying a word  😶

We gave up booze a long time ago, and at the time the Secretary of the Navy was named Joe something-something, and they used to say that the strongest thing we were allowed to drink on a ship was coffee, and it was dubbed "a cup of Joe."

This is great stuff @seawolf . Fascinating. We need to get you on an IH tour. Love to see a month in the life of a Senior Chief.

Two questions: Do you get to wear civvies (IH) on your down time? Do you get to work with your leather onboard?

It's not that glamorous, but perhaps when I get some time I can jot down a few notes. It's hard to capture what a Chief in the Navy does, but it's a pretty unique job.

                                1. The only times we're allowed to wear what we want are when we're working out, or sleeping. Other that that, it's uniforms all the time. Most of us wear 1-piece coveralls which are like pajamas. I'm authorized to wear a submarine sweater if I get cold. Google army 5-button sweater to see what I'm talking about. Submariners have been wearing these since WWI. I do wear IH almost exclusively in-port though. It's great travel gear.

                                2. I could have brought my leather onboard, but it takes up too much space, and there are thieves onboard, and (sadly) I don't trust anyone around my tools/leather. Also, by the end of the day, I just want to get in the rack (bed) and watch a movie or read for a little while. I wake up at 3am to work out, so I'm usually in bed with the lights out by 7:30.

There are over 5,000 people on this ship, and ample places to hide things. It's near impossible to find a thief. They did catch a guy that transferred money to his account from two other people's accounts (shipboard cash card system) to the tune of almost $800. He got caught, and he was dealt with swiftly and harshly, but that's rare. People that steal small items don't generally get caught. It sucks. I hate that I can't leave something laying around.

                                            1. I could have brought my leather onboard, but it takes up too much space, and there are thieves onboard, and (sadly) I don't trust anyone around my tools/leather.

so how do you guys root out the thieves? I would think that being on a ship and in the military something like this wouldn't happen. that really sucks

It sucks. I hate that I can't leave something laying around.

shocked and amazed. do you share quarters with another shipmate or are you lucky enough to have your own space due to your rank? I'm not sure how living arrangements are in the Navy, especially on a ship. I only know that when my brother was in the Air Force he had a roommate in the barracks until he got married.
