      IH-666S-21 Reinforce frayed cuffs?

My IH are a little over a year old and I'm noticing early wear where I cuff them. Curious if you think it is worth sending to IH or rail car to get them reinforced and fixed now or should I just try to avoid cuffing in the same spot. I prefer for the repairs to not be noticible, so was hoping if I do something now it would be less visible. Thanks friends.

@mobius111 From my experience, your wear is the cost of cuffing and at this point isn't bad (as you said "early wear". You could try cuffing in a different spot, but I don't think it will work as my cuffs tend to resettle where they want, which is normally where they were in the first place.

@JoshC worth a visit for repair yet? Any suggestions?

@mobius111 Thank you for shooting that across. Personally, I think you still have a fair amount of wear before they start to really go or need attention, but I would ensure that when you're not wearing them, you unfold the cuff, especially when washing! All the dirt gets caught up in the cuff otherwise, and that is what slowly eats away at the denim.

Also, welcome to shoot me any other questions or photos at shop@ironheart.co.uk. Just address them to me, and I will be there to help.

Time for some reinforcement? @JoshC or wait another couple of months? 🤔

@DeeDee85 I Still think you have a little bit of wear still there, but if you start seeing through the denim when holding them up to the light, then we can get them in. it still looks quite strong still just a bit of fuzz where the denim is slowly being worn in.

Anyone here got some photos of how they have repaired tears in the front pocket bags, specifically up at the top along the seam/stitches? My 14oz OD’s blew both out in three months, it’s only going to get worse. I can’t see a great way of doing this besides replacing the entire pocket bags.

@nrtphotos I will see if I have any pictures if not, Im sure I will be doing some repairs today so I will try and get some photos for you. But what I would do, is add another piece of thin cotton on the outside of the pocket but on the inside of the jeans (if this makes sense), and then have that piece of cotton come through the tear on the pocket bag, this will help reinforce the pocket and help keep the pocket usable, I would also unpick the yellow stitching on the pocket so I can darn the fabric together. and then restitch the yellow thread back along the pocket, but being OD you may want to use a more tonal thread as the yellow/gold thread will be very obvious.

@nrtphotos Here we can see a pocket that has come away from the seam. so what I would do first Is unpick the gold stitching just past the the tear itself.

2: using a piece of thin but strong fabric, I have place inbetween the pocket and the denim on the inside then through the tear on the pocket so the fabric pops out the other side then with a little bit of fabric glue I have placed on the pocket to hold this all into place and then cut any excess fabric off. (you can use a thicker material if you want but I would be cautious doing this as it may cause you to get a pocket outline where the pocket has become much thicker)

                              repair stage 3.jpg

                              1. Using a similar colour thread to the denim, I have darned the pocket and denim together to give that area extra support.
                                repair stage 4.jpg

                              2. I have then Flat stitched the pocket around the edge of the pocket bag, to give it move protection, this one in particular had some holes forming so this should help a little bit.

                                repair stage 6.jpg

                              3. I have then stitched the yellow thread back into the jeans to recreate that original finish as best as we can. It is slightly visible that this has been done but what scars dont.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions dont hesitate to get in touch.

@JoshC thank you for a very detailed response, much appreciated. Couple questions:

1 - How do you just darn the edge of the pocket like that? I would have thought it would go through both sides of the pocket, not just the outer edge.

2 - Do you fold over the edge of the new material along the mouth of the pocket or just trim the raw edge?

3 - Any possibility of a picture of the inside of that darned edge/pocket?

                                Thanks!

@nrtphotos I didn't im afraid and I have already sent them back to the owner, If I get another one similar I will load up a photo for you. But essentially what I have done is put the pocket through the arm of the darning machine and darned over the top, so it has sewn the pocket and the top layer of denim together that way it doesn't sew the pocket together.

as for the new piece of material I fold that back along the inside of the pocket, ill try and get another couple of photos so you can see.
