Was lucky enough to get a pair of my grail boots. JL M43 in rough out suede. Super comfy right out of the box…not sure if it’s due to the last or the leather being more supple, but they’re great. Curious if anyone has any advice on care for roughout leather? I’ve seen a lot of conflicting advice out there…

@sweetlou Lovely boots. JL is my favourite boot brand at the moment.
So far as care goes, wear them, brush them every few wears. If you wear them with denim they will crock. They won't need conditioning for some time, if you do condition them, they will become a lot darker.

@NickD Thanks Nick! Yeah, I’d seen some images of treated rough out and it really did change the color of the boots which I really like. I was a little concerned about water staining untreated leather but don’t want to baby them either. Denim rub off is just going to be part of the process since that’s all I wear

@sweetlou I’ve been eyeing these lately… I’m curious, 1/2 size or a full size smaller than your typical sneaker size?
-
If you want to keep them looking crisp, I would definitely treat them with a suede protectant like Bickmore Gard-More or something similar. It really does not change the color much, and even if it darkens slightly at first, once you brush them and wear them a bit you will forget it ever changed. Even the old school Kiwi spray does not alter the color very much.
I have been able to keep a pair of tan suede Indys looking pretty darn good for well over a decade using that approach.
For cleaning, Kiwi or Bickmore suede cleaner works well with a horsehair or synthetic brush, depending on how much you need to get into it. I still stay away from the copper wire brushes unless the boots are really trashed, because those can tear up the nap.
Edit: Once again, if you want to keep them looking fresh, you can do multiple applications of the protector. The sooner you apply it, the better off you will be in the long run when it comes to preventing stains.

@cb09 Yeah, I also had trouble figuring out what size to get based on varying advice online…but I went a full size down and they fit great. I have a pair of JL Combats a full size down which fit nice as well. I’m a 10 in sneakers, 9.5 in Red Wing, 9 in JL and Viberg for reference.

@northsouthdenimguy Thanks for the advice! Those Indys look great

Thanks enjoy your JL’s.
I’m looking forward to start wearing my tall JL Sahara desert boot as the weather warms up. His boots are so damn nice and comfortable.
-
@northsouthdenimguy have you worn those with darker denim? I’m impressed with the suede protector if you have.
-
Yes, with raw RRL and Imogene & Willie when I first got them many years ago. Quite a bit with Stevenson overall company denim. More recently last few years mostly with Orslow fatigues.
I’ve found with most denim(not IH) If it doesn’t get wet the transference is sometimes minimal. But I’m sure the protectorate has something to do with it.
