yeah white gold is just too "soft". my wedding band from cartier is made from white gold and it's full of scratches, now to think of it, should've gotten their platinum version..

I got a 24 carat band precisely because I wanted it to have all its hard edges rubbed off it in double quick time

Wow, 24k?  That is soft.  I'd be afraid it would get mangled up too quickly.

And platinum is nice for rings, but it isn't especially hard.  Julie's engagement, wedding and anniversary rings are all platinum, and they've developed a soft matte finish from years of abrasions.  If you want a metal that will stay polished and shiny forever, you need to get something like tungsten.  OK, technically it's a ceramic, but still…

Tungsten is great but can't be sized. It also is a problem to get off if you injure your finger. I've seen other rings including titanium cut off, but from what I've read tungsten has to be broken.
I have a platinum band and it has take on a beautiful, almost stonewashed look.

Yeah, I've heard a couple of gruesome stories about titanium and tungsten bands that have had to be forcibly removed.  Definitely something to avoid.  I like platinum a lot, and if I didn't have a sentimental attachment to my wedding ring, I probably would have gotten a platinum one.

There's always palladium, which is harder than platinum, but slightly more prone to being dented.

There aren't many watches made out of it though…

personally i'll go with their previous lineups.. especially the Milgauss steel case and maybe the explorer II.. Im sure there's always high demand for precious metal but i'm fine with just a steel case.

Steel is still the best case material, all things considered.  Although I must admit, I've grown to like titanium watches, too.  I used to really enjoy wearing a hefty watch, but after wearing a titanium one for a while, the lightness is a refreshing change of pace.  The difference in wearability between a titanium and a steel bracelet can be especially dramatic.

The best case material is obviously depleted uranium, because it proves your manliness. 😃

I thought they had done this before? Maybe not, but I'm not surprised. Don't expect the price to reflect the different movement though.

In my opinion, that's less of an issue than Zenith's ugly designs.  The company's only real draw is, and has always been, the El Primero movement.  As long as they keep making that, they'll continue to survive.  But unless they can create some appealing long term models, like the Daytona, Speedmaster Professional, Navitimer, etc., they're never going to thrive.

Now if the move to outsourced movements means that they're going downscale and intend to compete in a more affordable category, this might have a chance of working out for them.

Well I think they are trying to move past the fashion phase that one of the former CEOs pushed for. They are making more conservative and handsome watched like the Primero chono 1969. I have owned a Zenith dress watch in the past and it was a decent mid tiered piece. Manufacture manual movement, gold hands, guilloche, but not the same level finish as the big dogs IMO.

I believe Zenith used Martel movements in the past, but they had purchased Martel prior so it was still 'in-house'

I know it shouldn't and that its completely illogical but sorta cheapens the brand and EP movement in some stupid way to me.
