Long time, first time, but confused…. Help/Advice

I've been following the denim world for the past few months and have wanted to get my first pair, but find myself confused. Namely, all of the acronyms and such have made it hard to figure things out at times. I get most of the denim care concepts and all that but ultimately, I just don't know what jeans are good starting blocks.
I am a pretty standard guy, in that I enjoy the straight leg, or modern fit.
The current jeans I own are some Levi Heshers, and a pair of PRPS Heirloom Barracuda's that I found steeply discounted. The Heshers look more classy (dark nice color) but the PRPS's are SO very comfortable and much better made, but came with some distressing.Anyway, I just need some advice on where to start. I hear IH are great, Sammys (Samurai), PBJ etc, but just dont know where to start.
So my questions : For a classic, good fitting, everyday straight leg jean what are the Brands/Models to look at? I want something durable enough that it wont fall apart before it gets some character.
Hemming. I am short, roughly 5'8. 34w/30L jeans usually fit with a cuff, so I am unsure about the length on some, and if I have to hem, what is the proper way to go about things?

Waistwise I would strongly advice you to measure the waist of your currently best fitting jeans… Lengthwise I would stick to a 30.5" inseam if you want to cuff... Anyhow: we're all here to help so do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you have on your mind...

i am biased, but i would beg you to consider the gateway drug, IH634S.
here rough & dirty are a few reasons i think these will work well for you. the jean are a straight leg cut. the denim used on them is comfortable, durable & suitable for 3 out of four seasons of the year (some actually wear them year round, but that's neither here nor there). the denim is sanforized so they look good out the box without having to be soaked. this gets rid of some the uncertainty that can come with not being sure what size to purchase to account for shrinking & soaking. this also frees you up to get your jeans chain stitched to a proper length before getting them without worrying about the length & having to account for shrinkage after your soak.
i find these jeans look amazing on a wide range of body types & can be sized up or down depending on your threshold for discomfort & the kind of fit you are trying to accomplish. to determine size & such i would measure a current pair that fit you well & compare with the sizing chart for this model.
again 634s are it, but like i said i am biased

Get 634S's Blue Jeans (Indigo)
(forget blacks and other shades)As said measure your best fitting jeans that have about same rise as 634s will have. There's guide how we measure our jeans. There are other ways also, but they are wrong
Decide where you want your jeans to end, measure inseam. IF you want to cuff, std. cuff is 2"
and add 0.5", so total addition 2,5" to your inseam lenght if you want to cuff. (no cuff, add only 0,5") to inseam lenght. 0,5" is for combing, and even 634S are sanforized, they'll shrink just a bit in lenght as all denim does.And at last, but not least: Talk to G, he'll get you through it.

So it is clear who the Denim gods are pushing me for, and they look like a great pair of jeans.
However, got a little confused on the cuffing thing, and the lengths. Anyone able to straighten that out? I usually cuff , but not a thick cuff like I see some do.
Also, I was looking at the World Tour thread and noticed alot of changing in the sizes that Giles, Lando etc mentioned. I will measure my best fitting Jeans, but if for instance I wear a 33-34, between shrinking and stretch, what do you do?

re cuffing.
If you need your jawns hemmed, here's the advice, I hope this makes sense.
Measure your inseam (cuffed lenght, if they are cuffed). Then add 0,5" for combing. Then add width of desired cuff. That's your total inseam lenght after hemming. Capiche?
I mentioned 2" cuff as I like wider cuffs, 1,5"-2" max. though. If you carefully read old posts in the forum, you'll get why I said std. cuff.

HAHA! Probably true Giles. I have read lots of the forum, and superfuture as well. I notice a couple names like Beatle on both.
The reason I brough up the sizing is because I've always read about shrinking(i.e. shrink to fit of raw denim).
The IH634s are sanforised, but more shrinking is still expected right?
However, the eventually stretch out? Just trying to get a feel for the shape of the jeans to expect.The indigo on the IH634s looks beautiful. Especially so after a little wear (the WT jeans looked great after a month or so).
Lastly,
This being the IH forum on top of IH making great jeans, I understand everyone pushing me that way. However, just to have some variety and all.
Any comparible Sams, PBJ's? Just want a few Brands/models that are quality and comparible to check out as well.
