I think (IMO) it is best to use the kit lens first and use it all the time for a couple of months to get the feel for it. She will also learn all the settings (keep her in manual), don't let her use the auto setting whatever you do.
She should begin to learn how shutter speed, aperture, ISO, all make a photo. At first I was shooting in auto but then realized I should be in Manual and easily got the hang of it.
Edit: btw, I don't think she would ever need a 500 f/4 haha, maybe when she goes pro.

Yesss, ok so I started my day off by trying to order a 24-70, but the place I was originally going to buy it from raised the price $50, so I tried another place. Looked all fine until I called them and they were out of stock and had to wait 2+ weeks. so I went somewhere came back got on the phone with Abes Of Maine and started hassling with them. 20 minutes later I got the lens down from $1399 to the original asking price of $1349 (not a big deal), so I bought it. I also got an extended 5 YEAR warranty on it (includes drops, etc..) and a polarizing filter on it as well (that is free). So all in all it cost me $1500, but I will be able to now have a good lens to use. Just thought I might share my story if anyone cares

good job laxlife1234.
i always seek out the best price & cover my purchases since i am accident prone. now let's see if you can put that tool to some good use

Yeah, I will put the thing through the wringer! Plus I got 6 years now to fuck it up (thanks to the extended warranty)!
I would have gotten the price down but to be honest I could care less about another $20, too much work.

^Will post up a LOT in the oncoming weeks hehe!
These are from the kit lens still… waiting on the 24-70... god this wait sucks I only ordered it a few hours ago..

GOD, i can't wait to use it! I only took 3-4 pictures so far the thing focuses so fucking fast! Iknow I will probably be getting the same lens as you Finn but the Canon version.
If I had to wait any longer though, I would die.

Ok, so here are a couple of test shots with my new lens, the thing is crisp as hell! It again… focuses soooo fast! I still like MF better than AF though, unfortunately that would take too long with this lens, so I will just use AF.
If you wanna view the EXIF, just click the images link should take you to Flickr.

It is the bird bath in my backyard that could use a… major?... cleaning, haha!
Thanks, well IMO keep the 18-55 as you really will not be making that much money off of it and wait until you buy a new lens before you sell it since zoom lenses are there for when prime lenses can't get the job done, if you know what I mean.
