      arrived at 8:30 AM!
      here's yesterday's photodump whilst I edit through today's pics
unfortunately a very boring day for me and the tour, but i have some (hopefully) exciting stuff lined up…

very early arrival. stan's wash shrunk back down to almost starting size (less than 16" across with the waist aligned). seemed tight... but then i realised in my eagerness to put them on i was still wearing my pyjamas

opening it up… and the fit:

minor chores around the house before i headed to class - swapped out a shredded saddle for one from another bike, and got the obenauf's out to fix up the saddle on my other bike. also got my headlights fixed up (so i can take you guys on a night-riding tour (no hasselhoff, sorry)) of perth

      saddle killed by the rain:

fixing lights (in taking the photo i realised i fucked up the ziptie… and had to re-do it)

home to a chilli con carne (delicious+++)

anddd a snake-mask courtesy of my girlfriend. she just finished a run last night so it's the first time in weeks she's been home before 11:30. celebrated by hitting the gym and getting to bed before 10

see you tomorrow for a tour of freo!

and some more action for you all! took the IHWTs for a ride down the coast this afternoon as i had a lecture to get to and the day was reasonably decent weather-wise

unfortunately most of my riding shots came out like this or this. evidently i need to work on my 30kmph photography…

anyway i normally ride down the highway, which is 2-3 lanes per direction and a bunch of dickhead drivers... so i escaped at claremont and jumped under the trainline to greener pastures...

much nicer. i lived in this suburb with a few friends last year and it's a really nice suburb… huge verges, huge old trees, right next to the ocean. perfect. in fact, here's my old place!

just down the hill, there's the vlamingh memorial. in case you missed it, there's a rather large sign pointing at it…

definitely along the coast now. this area (south cott) is a really nice beach, no killer breakers, dog friendly too. i used to jog down to the clubhouse and back, then just relax in the surf for hours on end. you can see the port at rous head in the background

technically no longer in cottesloe - this is now north fremantle. my photography seems to be improving around this point. managed to get a shot of the old dingo flour mill and the leighton development with the camera roughly horiztontal!

                coming past the north port

                and a huge shipbuilding shed

thankfully, just missed this trainload, as i would've been stuck here for a good ten minutes. no hyperbole either!

crossing the bridge into freo, and the southern (passenger + cargo) port from the bridge

                and from the land…

                the old fort knox storage

and some misplaced palms along the cycleway

                BOATS!

                TRAINS!

it's all happening! and now i'm at the west end, where notre dame (my university) is

                to be continued…

                            fremantle trip part ii…

and i'm on campus! the west end of freo used to be a major shipping hub. as such, a lot of these buildings are from the turn of the century and have been repurposed as classrooms. behind me is an old storage shed which has been turned into the library. ahead of up are a bunch of other repurposed grainhouses and stockrooms, that now form the law school.

locked up the trusty steed. more important than water is the coffee… definitely needed for a three hour crim lecture

the entrance to the court house, where the school operates moots and mock trials. and across the road is the park i normally take my lunch

and just a little bit further is the brewery. a very welcome sight at the end of a long day…

around the corner is half of the maritime museum. unfortunately i didn't get time to go inside for some photos, but there are some cool-ass shipwrecks in here…

walking the streets, and taking in more of the architecture. fremantle has pretty strong ties to its physical heritage, and as such you often see lots and lots of federation era buildings. even when they've been turned into carparks. a few examples of the architecture: 1 2 3
4, and an old orthodox church nestled in the middle. in addition to some old buildings, fremantle also has some old laws. for instance, it's technically illegal to do your laundry in the kitchen. moving along…

at the far end of high street is the roundhouse, which is situated at arthur's head - where the first british landing occured. it's the oldest standing building in WA, and was intended as a benthamite prison. it should be noted that unlike the eastern states, the swan river colony was initially entirely free men. it was only in the economic recession of the 1840s that we ended up receiving british convicts (as a source of free labour, and when their 7 years transportation was served, as population growth).

the black ball you see handing with the flags in the first picture is actually a time ball. up until WWII it would drop at 1PM every day in order for boats to accurately set their clocks. and the view from the top…

and back down high street because it's time for class! see you later…

me too! finished off a long week with another long day - 6th day in a row at the gym, 50ks of riding, and an afternoon of lectures. only one thing is gonna get this scowl off my face - swapping out of these ridiculous gym clothes and into some ih. (photo credit to my long-suffering girlfriend)

oh, and going out for burgers! i used to play in a band called whalehammer with rich and scott (dave, the fourth member, eloped to SF and now plays in rank xerox, amongst other bands) and we remain good friends, and all appreciate a good burger. anyway, we head out to a hole-in-the-wall burger joint called novembar and rock up just as they're turning off the burners. thankfully they heat up the hotplates for us to get the last burgers of the night…

the dude who runs the place, minh, is a self-confessed burger tragic and burger enthusiast. he's all about pushing the extremes of the burger, and one look at the menu confirms this ( 1 2 3 )

he also runs a couple of contests - finish the spiciest burger in ten minutes and get it free; take longer and pay double - or the man vs fat-boy burger, where you pay by the minute taken to complete it. we opt for safer choices, although scott decides to get two burgers (just after telling us that extreme hunger often causes him to make irrational menu choices. oh well).

note the scale model of the "to the roof" burger. and yes, it has been made before!

accidental shot of superblack shirt and WTs
                                          burgers come out…

note the signature star-shaped bun. i opted for the triple cheese…

… and demolished it with ease

afterwards, we head down to the foreshore and sink a couple beers. starts out like this

and soon the worries of the week have faded away. until next time…
