I worry a large will be a bit 'baggy' though and I'm also concerned about the arm length (I have short arms).

If it helps then having it both ways may be tricky. My XL is certainly baggy over just one layer.

You may need to work out how you would use it the most.

For temperate (i.e., oceanic) weather, my experience has been that a good N-1 with a solid shirt is all you need most of Winter. If you have gloves & a wool cap, you might not need to layer (Northern Europe or continental weather is another thing altogether).

Thanks so much for all the replies - they've been really helpful.

I was chatting to someone on IG who wears a medium (and it looks great on him). He is 6ft and 180lb. I am 5'10" and 170lb. So I figured a medium would be the best choice for me.

But now I'm a little worried there won't be room for layering. I don't intend to wear thick layers, but I'd definitely want room for an UHF with a t-shirt underneath.

I worry a large will be a bit 'baggy' though and I'm also concerned about the arm length (I have short arms).

          It's a tough call!

It's worth considering that if the jacket fits too tight it will most likely give less warmth as the alpaca lining will be compressed. Mine fits me perfect to layer over an UHF but probably a bit loose over a t-shirt. It's worth considering that this is a very warm jacket so I'd say it's unlikely that you'll wear it with thin layers underneath. I'd also say that the jacket has a very flattering cut which means that it probably won't look off if it's a tad big.

Even though I picked up my first N1 last year, the Olive 29 and I love it so much. This Indigo one seems like pure fire and the want is strong 😃

I've been returning over and over to the size chart on this one and I feel that it's a toss-up between the medium and the large. At 6' and 175 lbs, I feel as though I could go with either size depending on preference. I would really prefer a trimmer fit, but the dimension of most concern to me is the shoulder width as this jacket comes up narrower in that area than other IH jackets I own.

For those that decided to go with a smaller size: Do you find that the smaller shoulder size is not too constricting? I figure that the longer sleeve length may help to compensate for concerns in that regard.

Got myself this jacket in XS over the recent sale, as well as the IHM-24 in S. Turns out I like this one best (though the IHM-24 is pretty irresistable to me too), plus it fits me better, so I'll be keeping this one! Now I just hope there is still some winter left in store, so I actually get to wear it for a bit!

Just out of curiosity: anybody out there who knows why there's a considerable price difference between the indigo version of this jacket and the "regular" one? Is indigo dying more complex and thus expensive?

Correct, the dye itself is more expensive, and the process much more complicated. Getting a garment saturated with indigo to the degree this whipcord is, becomes especially difficult and requires skill and knowledge.

My pleasure. Jacket looks great on you btw, and the nice thing about the extra investment in the indigo version is that it will keep getting better and better.

Great fit and an excellent choice. This winter I upgraded from a Buzz Rickson N-1 to an IH version and as much as I like my Buzz there’s no comparison.

Good to hear. I was on the fence between the two amd opted for the IH because I haven’t been let down yet. You and I appear to be in the same traffic flow and I suspect there will be plenty more days to wear it.

I'm about 6 feet tall and weigh some 136 lbs. I've tried IH shirts in sizes S and XS but unfortunately had to return both of them because they were too baggy for me still, esp. round the back.

For shirting, I've recently discovered UES, another Japanese high quality work clothes brand. Doesn't quite compare to IH, but still their stuff is really nice too. Their shirts are generally fitted quite slimly, which is great for skinny guys like me.

I tried the IHM-24 in size S. The lenth of the jacket and the sleeve lenght were perfect, but otherwise it was too bulky for me. If your shoulder, chest, and hip sizes are a bit more substantial than mine, I guess you should be fine!
(Incidentally, when I ordered, I heard from Graham that most of the IH crew size down from their normal shirt size for these deck jackets…)

Very nice. I wonder whether it will bleed a lot or not

I’ve only had it a couple of days but there’s been no noticeable bleeding so far. It’s an even indigo dye which looks excellent in my opinion. Matches really well with any indigo jeans.

Just an update. I’ve worn the jacket fairly regularly over the winter months and there’s a nice amount of bleeding from indigo to white to areas where there’s been a bit of friction. I’ll try and take some photos.
