I am going to say something sacrilegious here  :-[.
I have always been a western guy and copped the western.
But IMHO, this colourway goes better 😎 in a workshirt than a western.

        That was certainly my opinion.

By the same token, I love the colour and pattern of the upcoming yellow and black crazy check,  but the IHSH-303-YEL western version works best by far for me.

I’m not refined enough in my sensibilities to know why, it’s more of a gut reaction.

Whoa.  I got some sort of lucky.  The XXL released from someone's cart and became available and at that very moment I snatched it up!  So lucky.

Had to get this color because my 2-yr. old daughter is fairly obsessed with anything purple.  On some mornings she demands a purple smoothie in a purple cup with a purple straw… and that's only the beginning.  She's always looking for the purple crayons and markers.  Her new toddler-sized car seat had to be the color... you guessed it...

It all started a few weeks back when I took her to grandma's for her 1x per week babysitting visit.  For whatever reason, grandma turned everything into "purple day" with both her and grandpa wearing purple clothes and all food getting served on purple plates and drinks in purple cups and she got some sort of purple-colored toy.  There's been no going back from that.

Anyway, I really wasn't planning on buying anymore clothes this year and my 2 UHFs are more than sufficient to meet my needs however, when I saw this purple-colored UHF I could not get it out of my head.

            Excellent, I’m happy for you.

That is also one of the best justifications for a luxury purchase I’ve ever heard [emoji1]

                I completely agree.

The only two UHF I am buying this year are this 299 work shirt and the 303 Western, best of the bunch in my opinion.

Wondering if it's too baggy on me for a size large, and I am assuming it will shrink in the wash. It was hard to size as I am tall and lanky. opinions?

It will shrink if you wash it hot or tumble dry it. Cold washing/air drying won’t do much. If you do go for shrinkage then be careful with the arm length.

I think it looks good although the western cut may be a better fit for your body shape.

This is my first work shirt and I really liked the look of it over the western for this color way.

I’m assuming if I decided to wash it (to shrink out the torso part a bit), I would have to deal with the sleeve shrinkage as I’m not sure there’s a way to hot dry it without involving the entire garment?

You’ll get shrinkage just from a hot wash. Not need to machine dry. By the look of things you have long-ish arms but you could afford to lose  half an inch or so.

I’d recommend just a hot wash and air dry first.

I agree with @neph93 that a wash will probably give the shirt a little more defined a fit, which sounds like what you're after.  I would also agree that the work cut is more responsible for the more relaxed fit than the actual size.  I have two work shirts but a lot of Westerns, since I'm a small guy (5'6") and the work doesn't fit my frame as good.  You e got yourself a great shirt, though, I'm sure I'll be kicking myself for not grabbing one

My humble 2 cents are the shoulders look a bit wide & I don't think you'll be able to get much shrink there.  You could probably size down IMHO.

I agree, he does make amazing recommendations. I think if I weigh the shipping it back (extrs work + $) bit against the possibility of getting a size medium that could shrink too small after a wash, (as Graham told me) it may be better to just hot wash this one, reap the benefit of whatever shrinkage comes out of that, and if anything, use this shirt for layering (if need be) as it's not terribly over-sized.

I will wash it today and see how it goes.

Given your slim build and long arms the western will be easier to fit I suspect. Plus the yellow/black looks awesome in a western.

I also think the medium in this would not be great for you as it would be shorter in the body and any shrinkage would leave you with a problem in the arms.

As it is it looks nice and relaxed. As you say, layering is an excellent option. This would look great over a grey mark sweatshirt or hoodie.

A hot wash will help for sure, I’m just a little nervous for you regarding the sleeve length. Go slowly at first, 50-60C, low spin. If you feel you can get more shrinkage after that you can do another wash/spin dry.

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes.

@orion213 Neph always gives the best advice.  I tend to agree with him about the western cut for you but understand liking the work shirt.

Thanks for your kind words gents. Any wisdom I may have has been won through years of experience and a small fortune in purchases [emoji1]

Given your slim build and long arms the western will be easier to fit I suspect. Plus the yellow/black looks awesome in a western.

I also think the medium in this would not be great for you as it would be shorter in the body and any shrinkage would leave you with a problem in the arms.

                                        Thank you, neph93.

I feel terrible self-centered and like I am hijacking this thread to suit my own benefit, but better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

These are the only settings I can find on my machine that match what you suggest, can you confirm if these settings are suitable? Do I wash with detergent or none?

No need to apologise. Opinions may differ, but if it were me, I’d start with warm/no spin and see where you end up. You can always go back and blast it with a hotter wash, but no vice Verda. I’m hindsight Reuben’s right about sleeve length, so I’d start cautiously and get progressively more extreme 🙂

Not at all mate. One of the reasons this forum is here is to share the wisdom and spread the joy.

Based on that pic, I'm assuming you're in the US. Along with free health care one of the bonuses of living in Europe is programmable washing machines (jk  😉 )

I wouldn't use "Hot" as that may be a 80/90C wash which may kill the shirt. Try "Warm" first and "Low Spin". No detergent needed if it isn't dirty, although a little may help lubricate the threads.

When you take it out it will be quite wet. Put it on a hanger and give the sleeves a damn good stretch by holding the cuff at the seam on one end and the seam at the pit on the other. Do this every now and again on both arms as it will mitigate a little of the shrinkage in the sleeve.
