great suggestions @Graeme Multi FX solutions have a bad rep in my mind but they're pretty underrated. Apart from some gear specific tones I'd challenge a lot of people to tell the difference between an amp sim and the real thing.

        Thanks.

It seems that there are a lot of Helix versus Headrush discussion threads around the web, and none are conclusive…

My younger brother recently got a Bias Spark, which is a simpler unit, and he rates that. Maybe I'll pick something like that up, and upgrade to a full fat rig down the line.

I'm looking at getting back into the guitar and am eyeing up a multi fx / amp simulator to run it through. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

The Line 6 HX Stomp is pretty tempting. They offer a cut price version of Helix Native to registered owners, and if I feel really flush, there's the Powercab to amplify it.

However, the HeadRush Gigboard is a similar price, but less compromised, and their FRFR speakers are a lot cheaper than the Powercab.

i’ve had the og pod pro and floorboard for a long. long time. i really like the amp models and effects of it. you could probably locat a set on ebay for good price

i use to use the Helix stuff w cubase but thats been too long ago to comment on. version i had wasnt w10 compatible and i didnt do the cubase upgrade.

i also have my Korg A4 from like 1983 that is super choice for a multi effects pedal. snag one if you can find one.

i switched from individual pedals after i bought the A4. battery costs and failures pissed me off. only one i regret purging are the ibanez tube screamer and sonic distortion. now those. the og ones. are STUPID expensive. IMHO.

The good news is that if a TS-808 is what you’re after, there are plenty of faithful clones out there for a fraction of that price.

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve worked in music retail, but as of several years ago (and I don’t think things have changed much), either the Maxon OD-808 or the Ibanez TS-808 reissue are about as authentic as it gets. The Maxon OD-808 Pro and the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive are both great clones with tweaks that improve the circuit in different ways while keeping the basic vibe of the original.

The IK Multimedia iRig Stomp I/O looks really interesting.

                              https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigstompio/

It's a USB footswitch, expression pedal, and digital interface, that resembles a multi effects unit. This is plugged into an iPad, iPhone, Mac, or PC. The host device runs Amplitude, which is bundled, and the whole thing runs as a modelling rig.

There's a demo of it here.

The iRig costs €299, which includes Amplitude, or half the price of the Line 6 HX Stomp that I'm thinking about. I'm sure that there's a catch somewhere.

Anyone got any experience with it?

@theorocks I'm currently trying to decide whether to go for something like the iRig Stomp, or get something like a Line 6 HX Stomp (or possibly Helix LT), Headrush Gigboard, or Boss GT-1000.

An iRig Stomp costs about the same as a Bias Spark, which my brother recently got. I keep on thinking that there's got to be a catch somewhere, surely it can't be up there with something like a Line 6 Helix?

OK, I'd need a set of monitors. The entry level IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors are relatively cheap. All, I'd be looking at spending the same as one of the floor units I mentioned above.

The other option would be something like a HX Stomp, and then add in an amp. Or even get the amp first.

I like the Orange Rocker 32. It ticks a lot of boxes (tubes, FX loop, stereo, switchable between US and EU voltages), and I could hook it up with the four (or in this case five) cable method.

I really like the Swart Amps ST Stereo Head, but that's expensive, lacks an FX loop, and would have to be physically modified to run on 110 volts in the event I end up in the US. (Which is currently a possibility.) And it'd result in my bankruptcy. 🙂

Alternatively, I could get an FRFR speaker, the Line 6 Powercabs look good.

Any chance your familiar with IEM?

@theorocks I've got copious amounts of free time due to the Coronavirus lockdown and unemployment, so I need something to keep me out of mischief. 😉

                                          I'm also looking into dogs…

I don't know anything about IEMs. I got a pair of custom earplugs for riding a motorcycle years ago, and the process involves putting stuff in your ear to make an impression. So you're probably going to be constrained by who offers the service locally.

As for the iRig Stomp, the two problems that I've read about with it are that the sockets on the back panel aren't too durable. And there can be latency issues when running it into Amplitude on a PC. But iPads seem to be fine.
