^^ Probably the most common mistake you can make is "doing it because the pros do".  In this case especially.  Have to remember that they are just that, professional.  Their mechanics are strong, their feet and legs have taken a decade or more of constant hammering to reach that point of callousness, and on top of that they carry literally zero extra body weight.

Not the same sport but it also makes me think of rich, middle aged people who want a 'nice' bike so they go and buy one that guys in the Tour de France ride.  Are those nice bikes?  Yes, really nice.  Are they fast?  Yes, as fast as it gets.  Are they comfortable?  No.  Not unless you've been riding 15-20 hours or more/week for a decade.  Otherwise you will go faster than you would on another type of bike but will be aching all over while doing so.

I think that is a very common problem in nearly every athletic discipline that has entered the mainstream. The amount of 18-30 year olds I either teach or that go to my gym that start off weight training with a five day split "because it's what the pro's do and I want to be like them" is amazing. It is the least appropriate training split for anyone at all who isn't professional, already super trained, on steroids, or all of the above.

Of course the businesses that grow up around running, weightlifting, cycling etc also exploit this tendency ruthlessly.

It will help @Chris but not unless you also pay some Instagram coach a large monthly fee to "tailor" some spurious and ineffective work-out routines for you. And by tailor I mean rob from "Pumping Iron".

Thought this was a cool shot from my 7 mile trail race this past weekend:

I'm currently about 8 weeks out from Chicago and I'm closing in on peak mileage. This week is 77-78 miles, next week will be 81-82, and the week after that I'll peak at 83-85 miles. After that, I'll drop 3-5 miles a week until I really taper out race week, which will enable me to hammer some big workouts as I approach the fitness peak. I've usually tried to keep mileage fairly consistent for a good 2-ish months, but I'm trying a slightly different approach this time. I'm intentionally holding the workouts back slightly until the mileage starts to drop because I've generally had the tendency to hammer workouts a little too early in the season, and I've peaked a bit early my last three seasons, which is obviously not ideal. Looking forward to seeing how this one goes.

Are you from Chicago? It’s a good course. As flat as can be. Tons of crowd cheering the entire way. Last I ran it was 2015. Marathoning is just too much of a time commitment for me. Only 1/2’s now. Just trying to make those faster. I usually volunteer at the race. I’ll keep an eye out for you amongst the 40,000.

@rocket stylin! Glad I’m not the only one who likes the bright colors. Though I guess my reasoning is somewhat morbid- if I’m ever stuck out there and SAR is looking for me, neon will stick out amongst all the colors of the forest…
@cander49 you are looking pretty effing fast lately. Report back on your thoughts when it’s all over. I’ve taken a different approach to training this year too. Seems to be working so far, with four weeks until race number two, I feel woefully unprepared!

I'm in Utah nowadays, but I grew up in MN and my parents both ran Chicago back in the 90s, so I was out there during the race years ago. Yeah, I'm looking forward to a nice fast, low altitude course!

Running a 5k today. The Two Roads Brewery Shore to Pour Run. I try to do an organized 5k every other week or so. Beer and Philipino BBQ to follow. I just learned that a good chunk of this race is over sand 😑  Woohooo!!

                                      Maybe so. Maybe not
