I am running the Yorkshire Marathon which is taking place in York on Sunday October 14th 2018. I am taking part in this event because I find setting achievable personals goal for myself, such as this, helps me to stay focused and motivated over the weeks of preparation and training, particularly on the difficult days when the weather is far from
ideal or when I feel tired.

I went to Broadway Lodge for treatment of the disease of addiction, something I'd suffered with for a number of years. After leaving Broadway in August 2009, I moved to Bristol where I lived and worked until March 2013. After Bristol I moved to Trowbridge, got married and took up running and haven't stopped running since.

I am so grateful for what there is in my life today which I didn't have prior to attending Broadway Lodge. Broadway Lodge was fundamental in guiding me towards who I am today. Through completion of primary and secondary stages, I gained what I needed to go to Bristol, a new city to me, and engage with life whilst continuing to grow as a person. I site the foundation I gained at the Lodge as the bedrock on which my life now rests.

To run the marathon to raise funds and awareness for Broadway Lodge seems a natural thing for me to do. Any money I raise that may help another person get the support they need is well worth 26.2 miles of my own blood sweat and tears.

Thank you in advance for your support, I am grateful for any donations to help me achieve my target to raise £400 for Broadway Lodge.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Just made a little donation for you, @den1mhead . Good luck with the marathon!

On a related note, while my hip has been bugging me lately (unfortunately flared back up), I'm still running Berlin in 3 1/2 weeks. Training has been severely impacted, so I won't be in PR shape anymore, but I'll still give it my best effort. I'm using my running at Berlin to fundraise for Parkinson's UK. I did my PhD in Parkinson's research and am still doing academic research on DBS, a common treatment for Parkinson's disease, so I saw this as a great opportunity to combine the two. Parkinson's UK has provided over 100 million USD in funding of research grants since they started, and a lot of this work has directly improved the lives of people with Parkinson's disease. I work really hard at marathon training, but marathon training is not nearly as hard as living with Parkinsonism. I set a goal of 800 GBP, and I'm nearly halfway there, so I'm hopeful that I can meet the goal!

I'm really sorry to hear that. Parkinson's sucks. I saw a donation from a Chris in there that I didn't know, so if that was you, big thanks.

Thanks! Really appreciate it! I've gotten some really good traction from my local craft beer community in the last 24 hours, so it's awesome to see this starting to blow up now that the race is a few weeks away. Now, to just figure out how to get in some real training over the next few weeks without blowing up my hip…  😃 Plan right now is another cortisone shot within 24 hours of flying out, but that won't help me get in any long runs or workouts without major pain and injury regression in the mean time. Hah. Oh well; guess I'll at least not have way too many recent miles in my legs leading into this one.  😉

They definitely will with time. At least for me, getting hurt from time to time is part of serious training, even if it shouldn't be.  😃 That's awesome re the 5K! Enjoy it!

Yup.  Hope you hit your fundraising goal.  And enjoy Berlin, even though it sounds like injuries are going slow you down.  That's a shame, given how fast the course is.

Thanks so much! And, yeah. Timing really couldn't have been worse, but it'll still be fun.

Hah. Not so good. I decided to go out close to PR pace (2:40 compared to 2:38) despite the lack of fitness and just hope for some magic. I haven't been able to do a run of more over 10 miles except on the antigravity treadmill in the last 7 weeks, so the magic didn't happen and it was quite challenging for me, especially with hip getting bad in the second half, and I finished in 2:55, just very happy to be done. Still very glad I ran such a great event, particularly in such a historic day. I'll come back some time when I'm properly prepared and try again! But, for now, it's time for some recovery from the injury!
