It's not that glamorous, but perhaps when I get some time I can jot down a few notes. It's hard to capture what a Chief in the Navy does, but it's a pretty unique job.

      1. The only times we're allowed to wear what we want are when we're working out, or sleeping. Other that that, it's uniforms all the time. Most of us wear 1-piece coveralls which are like pajamas. I'm authorized to wear a submarine sweater if I get cold. Google army 5-button sweater to see what I'm talking about. Submariners have been wearing these since WWI. I do wear IH almost exclusively in-port though. It's great travel gear.

      2. I could have brought my leather onboard, but it takes up too much space, and there are thieves onboard, and (sadly) I don't trust anyone around my tools/leather. Also, by the end of the day, I just want to get in the rack (bed) and watch a movie or read for a little while. I wake up at 3am to work out, so I'm usually in bed with the lights out by 7:30.

It goes Chief, Senior Chief, then Master Chief. Senior Chief is cool because people just call me "Senior."

So when you get promoted, will they call you Master?

I asked that same question when I was a young lad, to a Master Chief, and he quickly (and sternly) corrected me and said, "No, it's Master Chief."

            whoops!

We had a thief on the submarine I served on. He's lucky we didn't kill him when he got caught. Submarines don't have any room for thieves.

so how do you guys root out the thieves? I would think that being on a ship and in the military something like this wouldn't happen. that really sucks

There are over 5,000 people on this ship, and ample places to hide things. It's near impossible to find a thief. They did catch a guy that transferred money to his account from two other people's accounts (shipboard cash card system) to the tune of almost $800. He got caught, and he was dealt with swiftly and harshly, but that's rare. People that steal small items don't generally get caught. It sucks. I hate that I can't leave something laying around.

shocked and amazed. do you share quarters with another shipmate or are you lucky enough to have your own space due to your rank? I'm not sure how living arrangements are in the Navy, especially on a ship. I only know that when my brother was in the Air Force he had a roommate in the barracks until he got married.

*This is a horror story told to me buy 2 of my retired Navy co-workers, one, a retired Senior Chief... But, he had minimal ship time.

tree fell through my master bedrooms bathroom and burst into my wife's closet (yes tree went through the siding an insulation into the closet).

this is a first world problem because i am lucky enough to have 3 showers in my home so this an inconvenience and i put off redoing her closet for about 5 years so this gives me an excuse to actually personalize it and do it how she wants.

everyone is okay, we have 2 extra bedrooms to sleep in and dual heating zones so basically the 1st floor is a bit colder than usual but we aren't wasting heat down there and we had to clean up glass and board up stuff because of the storm . . . but all in all at least i can go out there and make a couple extra dollars to take care of this.

makes me laugh cause it brought me back to when i broke my closet because i had a few iron heart shirts hung together and the rail said he was quitting and not holding up this heavy stuff anymore. i got images somewhere will look for them later . . .

whoa. that must've been a very stress inducing experience. home repairs are bad enough but home repairs due to mother nature are another thing entirely.

cleaned up already as it happened last night when everyone was sleep and there was no way I would leave it like that.
funny as hell cause i slept through it and my wife woke me up with the "what the hell was that noise"

just a temp fix of garbage bags, cardboard boxes, painters tape and staples but it keeps the elements out.  going to get more heavy duty garbage bags and some duck tape to seal things off until i can get contractors out here to give me a few estimates.

i filed a claim with my insurance but the deductible for acts of god makes it as i might as well take care of it out of pocket.

i found myself hanging out downstairs for a while to appreciate having heat upstairs and having a reason for wearing my heavy duty goodies. goes with my insane concept of actually appreciating stuff that we can control and the way we approach things we can not control.

plus writing about it is a great release for me and keeps me in a good place

now if i can only get a pair of UHR 21/23 denim in the 555 cut with stealth arcs and the cut as intended on a 30" inseam the world would be perfect, hahahahaha
