Metallica has steadily gone downhill ever since Cliff Burton's passing.  Jason was still ok but Cliff was who made those original albums what they are.  Then Nirvana came along and changed music causing Kirk Hammett to essentially give up on writing a decent solo.  Ever since then their music has felt progressively more lazy.  They've really turned into a prog-metal band with no progression throughout the songs.  They used to have 5-6 riffs in one song.  Now they have 5-6 riffs in one album.

I know this is controversial, but I loved Lulu (not the Scottish singer). I'm a massive fan of Lou Reed, not so much Metallica. This album is a tough listen but so rewarding. Junior Dad is a classic. Here's James Hetfield claiming he is the table. Enjoy!

Smiley face indeed! Opeth is without a doubt my favourite band. Deliverance is one of their best "live songs" as well imo. Thankfully I've been fortunate enough to see them a couple of times.

Ah, that's amazing @Peter! I think Opeth may be mine as well… Deliverance was the first album I ever bought and is hands down my favourite album by them.

The first time I saw them live was at the Mayan in Los Angeles, but they were supporting their Heritage album at the time so it was an all acoustic set with no 'heavy' riffage and/or growling.

When I learned they were playing the special Deliverance / Damnation set at the SSE Wembley in London back in November, I knew i HAD to go. When they finally finished with Deliverance... I could die happy. If only they were able to perform 'Leper Affinity' it would have been a perfect concert for me... but cest la vie. I could go on about them, but I'll stop for now in case I get a bit too enthusiastic for my own good...

Awesome @PattyCakez! And it's ok, you can gush about Opeth all you want haha. My Arms Your Hearse is my favourite album by them. I even made up my own verse from all the songs on that album and inked it to my ribs..

I recently purchased Still Life and it's amazing. The Moore is such an intense track, it's gotta be one of my favourites now. Just because you went to the extent of tattooing your own created verses on your ribs based on My Arms Your Hearse, I had to buy the album. It shall be delivered to me today and I will give you my thoughts on it soon.

That makes me happy, @PattyCakez. Do tell what you think! I'm not really sure why I love it as much as I do. Guess it's just Opeth things, the feeling where there's always a certain passage, note, riff or something to specifically long for in each and every song. Except on Heritage, which honestly wasn't even a good album haha.

Damnit! Now I need to listen to their entire discography..

@Peter I've been listening to the album on repeat this past week and have got to say, the transitions between the songs are amazing. I especially love acoustic passages and the Madrigal-Amen Corner-Demon of the Fall transitions, it's epic. The production also reminds me very much of black metal albums I used to listen to quite a lot (Emperor, Darkthrone, Immortal etc.) so that was a nice touch.

I completely agree about looking forward to certain aspects of a song for Opeth.. That's what I love so much about Deliverance!! This is obviously a super subjective opinion, but the way Opeth is able to juggle pure brutality and such elegance through masterful songwriting really makes me consider their music to be 'art'. As as musician myself, I don't throw that term around lightly…

@PattyCakez the flow is indeed amazing. It's remarkable how much impact an acoustic passage or some clean singing can have. And yeah, the fact that the album packs everything that's great about 90s Scandi metal in general certainly doesn't suck either. Love me some Enslaved, Dissection, Emperor etc.

I consume A LOT of metal, and this https://mistur.bandcamp.com/album/in-memoriam really hits the spot. One of the best albums this year. Slightly "Opethian", but definitely more 90s extreme/melo black metal.

Oh you're a musician? What do you play?

@Peter Sorry for the delay in response, there's been a bit of traveling on my part..

It's been years since I checked out the metal scene to be honest. Sorceress and Hardwired (which I have yet to check out still) were the only 2 metal albums that I really looked forward to/ knew about in 2016. Definitely will check out In Memoriam, it seems that the response has been extremely positive. I think when I was at my peak of metal consumption (back in 2005/2006) I was listening to alot of Between the Buried and Me, Mastodon, Cryptopsy, Vital Remains, Slayer, Metallica, Immortal and Emperor (just to name a few haha).

I picked up the cello when I was 5 and taught myself guitar at 11; being classically trained I always tell people who shrug metal off as just 'loud and aggressive music' to at least appreciate the rhythms of the melodies. I think that was my thing with Slayer. Even though Kerry King would literally be maniacally playing the guitar on an open string for 3/4 of the song, you could tell that it was really the drummer Dave Lombardo who was placing the team on his back for alot of the tracks… But again haha that's just me.
