I'd put VC into the same bracket as Patek, Lange, and Audemars Piguet. So whilst the Quai de l'Ile is their budget piece, it's still got a lot of hand finishing and the Geneva Seal. They're a step up from someone like Rolex.

That said, it is about 50% more than the Daytona. :o

when i said same leagues, VC definitely belong in the 'holy trinity' as patek and ap. definitely a step up. although rolex are all in house built and materials sourced, it's not haute horology watch company..

What actually appeals about Rolex is that they're independent, and not a part of the LVMH, Richemont, or Swatch groups.

I do like the Daytona, but would have gone for the black dial instead.

          @Graeme:

The Apple comparison seems spot on. Porsche is similar, with a slow evolution, yet still considered best of breed; limited supply of in demand models; and an equally fanatical owner base.

Luxury goods companies are very good at just under supplying the market with hot products. Sometimes this drives up demand, there's an argument at Pistonheads that Porsche did this with the 911R, and in doing so they may have boosted the numbers sold.

I suspect that for all of Hodinkee's hyperbole about Daytonas fetching $30,000 on the secondary market, most people who want one will get one in the next year or so. Rolex produce a million watches a year, and they'd be stupid to leave a pile of the money on the table in order to maintain a mystique about one model. They'll limit production enough to make them hard, but not to the extent of a seven year wait.

There will always be a group of people who can't wait and will pay a premium for the Latest and the Greatest. Just to be one of the first. This culture comes and goes but at the moment it's at a frenzied boiling point. GT3 RS making 100-150k over list price. 911r contracts selling for 250k plus. It's like musical chairs. When the market falls which it always does then people can take massive losses. The idea of Daytona making twice the list price is madness.

I am not strange. I'm just not normal!

I agree. Rolex isn't stupid, clearly.  Holding down production to the point that people will accept several year waiting lists and pay double on the secondary market would be dumb.  I'm sure they'll slowly ramp up the volume coming off the assembly line and capture as many of those buyers as possible, and the used market will be more in keeping with other models.  A few people, the ones who always have to have things first, will pay demand bubble prices, but most will just wait.

Production speculation aside, it is the nicest looking Daytona I've seen in ages.  Especially the white faces version (sorry, Graeme 😉 ).

PS don't forget there's a 12 month retail wait on GMT Master II's in Sydney from the Rolex shop. I'm not sure how fast they'll open up the Daytona up. They are willing to hold supply down for years by the look of it!

it's amazing how much demand can change in a few years. didn't have anything about a waitlist when i got my gmt2 3 years ago. but maybe it was only the ln model and not the blro or blnr model so perhaps demand for that wasn't so high..

Anyone recommend the best place to sell a Omega watch? Is there specific sites or just eBay?

Haven't sold there recently, but I always had pretty good luck with watchuseek.

Continuing the Rolex love in, Monochrome have an article on the new Explorer. I like this piece a lot.

@Tempvs I've seen a couple of MB&F clocks in your collection, and I think that you've got a Silberstein too, so I suspect that you'll like their new collaboration. I do. 🙂

Yes I have a Silberstein and I have I bit of a thing for the MB&F clocks. I love this new watch it's fantastic. MB&F is a great Brand. My favorite piece is The Robot Melchior.

I'm very jealous of your MB&F spider.

You've got way too many nice watches @Tempvs. I'm sure that the readers of this thread would be happy to help you take them out and keep them wound. 😛

I saw the new Rolex Air-King in one of the local dealers. I think that it's a cooler watch than the new Daytona that Hodinkee were getting excited about the other day. 😛

One thing that did strike me is that it's basically a Milgauss, but here in Oz it retails for around $2000 less. So why exactly would I want to buy the more expensive watch? I like the thunderbolt hand and green crystal, but they're not worth that much.

The two things that I'd wished Rolex had done differently would have been to lume the 3, 6, 9 numerals, and add the Paraflex shock absorber system. The new Explorer has both of these, but not the antimagnetic case design.

The watch has grown to 40 mm, much to @Anesthetist's disapproval, but I thought that it sat nicely on my wrist.

For me I prefer the Explorer dial. This one has a bit to much going on. However this is the higher spec watch as it is anti-mag. Both are great watches and will serve very well for a life time of wear.

At least they picked a better proportioned handset. It irked the heck out of me when they upsized the Explorer but left the 36mm hands. A 40mm watch looks good on my wrist but the 34mm watch is one of my all time favorites. It felt like the underdog of the sport line, but had a great heritage. I would buy the 40 Airking but want either the smaller Blackbay or IWX first.
