Also felt up some Red Wings - lightweight and didn't really seem like they were sturdy compared to my Grensons… Really don't understand the appeal and rep they have... :-\
I agree. They are very different though, the Red Wings are basically work boots, where as ready to wear Grensons are a volume production version of a bespoke gentleman's shoe. Also, on average Grenson's are 50% -100% more than Red Wings, and i kind of feel Red wings are a little over priced?
i cant complain about the red wings i used for work for many years. the soles held out forever and they had good ankle support. they were great for jobs where i crouched alot because the sole was stiff so it didnt put alot of pressure on the arches of my feet, plus in the usa you can bring your boots into any red wing shoe store and they will replace the soles for you. they must be cheaper in the states than they are in other countries because i felt like compared to most "good" work boot companies they were priced pretty well.

I think we're comparing apples and oranges. Those Grensons, while not my style, look like they would be good for going out on the town or travel, but I sure as hell wouldn't wear them as a workboot.
Whether I'm rebuilding the back deck or hiking the rainforest in Puerto Rico, my Red Wings have been my go-to boot for the last couple years. Those Grensons look like they would hold up great to daily wear for years, but I'm not sure how the top is going to hold up if I had to rest some lumber on the top of my boots.
