        I don't get it either.

Rolex produce on the order of a million watches a year. So why are some pieces so unobtainable?

        supply v demand… 😛

I've put it down to controlled releases to stop a flood on the market. There's likely tons of stock. Every airport I've been to recently has had 1 on display ready to go. Another local authorized dealer thinks he can have 1 in sydney in 2 weeks. Maybe it's just marketing after all 🙂

@Tempvs I'm surprised that @Giles hasn't stolen that Fifty Fathoms off you yet. 🙂

          Nice collection, as usual.

you're not wrong in saying that. i can see that happening as they are the sort of company to not just push millions of products out on to the market and risk having too many out there.

went into the rolex store today to ask about a GMT Master 2 (and just try one on). The wait time for all models? 12 months! And they get 1 in stock each month. The first person to pay gets it. They give you 10 minutes from time of call to pay before calling the next in line. Ruthless!

Not the GMT Master 2 but still relevant…

It's the 'superlative chronometer' standard - they quietly rolled out a -2/+2 seconds/day standard for all their movements late last year.  The green tag denotes that its a part of that new standard.

I wonder if the GMT Master and Daytona are actually more available than legend would suggest. If it takes seven years to get a watch then I could see most people going elsewhere.

Rolex generally is just a great product. In my Hubble view a GMT or Submariner are as good as it gets in that price range. I have a few watches but if I could have only one and had to keep it for good I would choose a steel GMT. The steel watches are great value for money over a period of time. Generally they run for about 8-10 years before they need a service. However if used in deep water they need more regular checks.
The case work is to a very high standard and the movement is a real work horse, not a highly tuned race car. That's why it lasts for so long.
The latest watches are just getting better all the time due to more accurate machining and the modern oils used today that just don't degrade like the old ones did.
So for me a Steel sports watch will give good service over a life time of daily wear.

Thanks @Tempvs. I'll hopefully pick one up in a few months. They are about 15% more in Japan than list price of Sydney, which is a bit odd.
