After falling asleep barbel fishing last week I've given it a miss until today.

I've been really enjoying learning to use a centrepin + stickfloat with the added bonus of an excellent (free) tutor 🙂

Anyway, I took my friend to the weir today, 10 beautiful baby barbel + 1 trout and 2 perch.

No matter the size, at first it always seems to feel like you've hooked some thing 4x as big
      as what comes out!

      Great fun.

Tip off from a friend who did a match on the river recently…something kept nicking his fish.

1/2 hour today, then time to go home  😎

It was Giles, and the pike put up a good fight on my light gear.
            Only downside was that I trod on my camera seconds before taking the shots;
those were the last 3 pictures of its life ::)

Unfortunately not mate. I went out last week with a mate and his kids…Long story short, but we had to come in rather early due to his kids getting seasick. We caught a couple of coral trout, but nothing to really rave about 🙂 They are great fun to catch though.  I use  soft plastic lures most of the time with all my fishing, and they really hit it hard when they strike!

We have what's called a "demersal ban" on at the moment. It goes for 2 months of the year when all our demersal species are spawning.  We can still go after the pelagic fish like Spanish mackerel and tuna etc., but its illegal to target the demersals whilst the ban is on.

Next time I get amongst it, I'll definitely post some shots!

Keep your pic's up mate, its great to see how its done on the other side of the world! And at least one of us is catching some fish  😉

Nice one HFB :), thats interesting to know.
I guess a bit like our coarse fishing close season which now only effects the rivers for 3 months in spring.

I remember being really sick when mackerel fishing as a kid; my first and last time fishing from a boat 🙂 😶

Look forward to some monster pics from you when you get the time out!

Caught this Dorado on a handline, offshore Angola. These are great fun to catch, as they don't half put up a fight! I think it weighed in at +/-25lbs. The fillets were rubbed with Cajun spices, & blackened on the hot-plate within 45 mins of pulling it out the water. I've yet to encounter a better tasting fish than the Dorado, (aka Mahi Mahi/Dolphin Fish/Lampuka).

About 15 feet below on the next deck, which is about 20 feet above the water. The trick is to get the fish to surface and have its head out of the water, it just stops fighting then. Made a 3-prong gaff out of 8" welded u-bolts with the ends grinded to a point. Looks like a huge treble hook. Splice some 0.5" manilla rope around the welded eye. Then put a spring-loaded caribina through the manilla about 3 feet above the eye of the gaff. That way you can clip the caribina to your line and run it down straight under the fish, and then give it a good yank!
