Yeah, I guess it's sort of a Russian Speedmaster; it's a commemorative for the 40th anniversary for Yuri Gagarin's space flight.  I've had it for several years and it was dead stock when I bought it.

And you're right, Ane- 3133 movement.  Well, technically, it's the 31681, but that's just the 3133 with a subdial for 24 hour indication, which I'm sure you knew…

Not massively, apparently that is a flaw with the Mako XL's (read this after purchasing).

Nah, it's legible which is all I wanted really. It's a nice, chunky, reliable watch for little cash. I am happy.

The movement in it sounds quite interesting, so if you're a Blancpain fan go and take a look.

Where do grand seikos rank in the game of high-end watches?  Also, anybody have a snowflake here?  My long term plans (21st birthday perhaps….) were a silver datejust but after seeing the snowflake... god damn.  Also greatly appreciated that fewer people would ask me about it.

By snowflake, so you mean a Tudor BlackBay? If that's what you are talking about, it's a great watch! In terms of luxury watches, my opinion is that grand Seiko or "The Citizen" is one of the best value luxury watches that you can get. I have owned both (kept the Citizen) and will own another GS soon.

                          Actually, this stunning thing…

"The watches inspiration was, in fact, the winters of the Suwa Nagano region of Japan (where Shinshu watch studio was located).  The dial resembled the snow fall in Suwa.  Since it is in central Japan, with less humidity, the snowfall is light and airy and leaves snowdrift patterns as also seen in the alps surrounding.  The titanium case is to make it as light as a snowflake, and blue second hand and text is to give it the cold feel."

Apparently the movement is also insanely smooth, and it really just seems like this is a no bullshit kind of luxury watch that isn't trying to impress anybody.

To me it resembles a datejust, but like I said, I like that the only reason why most people would notice it is because it's beautiful, and not because of its name…

The only thing that beauty has in common with a date just is the date window. Great watch and now on my list 😉

Snowflake is an excellent choice for your first Grand Seiko.. The attention to details that was put into it is amazing.. Coupled with the spring drive technology, you just can't go wrong with it. Smooth sweeping blue secons hand, beautiful snow flake face, japanese precision and the exclusivity of owning one will make a panerai or even Rolex owner envy you. Hehehe

I'd say go for it. But bare in mind if you're planning to have it as an investment, then you might want to
Look at other big brands as the 2nd hand market or a grand seiko is not at all encouraging these days.

                              Just my 2 cents worth.

For sure.  If I wasn't going to get the seiko, my plan is a used datejust.  I figure if I get one on the second hand market, it shouldn't be too difficult to sell for what I bought it for should I find something that suits me better.  I believe the seikos have only recently been introduced to the western market, its probably best to find one second hand or wait until its recognition goes up to be safe…. just really love how simple it is.  Surprised I haven't really read much about it here.

Oh and there's a solar fueled quartz one... Defo need that... Fuck an auto  😃

@seul, why not look at the kinetics as well. Also seiko has released a reiteration of the classic seiko 'bull head ' chronograph.. it sells at a fair price as well..

@grandmasterben, datejust or an explorer is a good alternatives for sure. But if you're willing to spend a bit more ill take a look at the iconic omega moon watch or even a Tudor black bay. classic look and easy to sell off.

Ha, funny you mention the speedmaster… since actually looking at high-end watches, my dreams went from speedmaster to datejust to snowflake... I'm definitely attracted to that minimalist aesthetic.  The tudor looks nice but it just isn't my style.

I have a long way to go before picking one up even becomes a reality, but I'm fine with that.... it also allows for my tastes to change/mature without needing to sell and lose money.
