SpaceGnome, I've been tracking it since I first brought it up, GORUCK's manufacturing issues seem to have been resolved around march/april this year.

I won't be hiking the Himalayas or hunting down the Taliban so I should be fine. Also, if I did have an issue, all I have to do is send the bag in for repair or replacement for free.  $195(w/20% discount) for a Made in USA bag with a lifetime warranty isn't bad if you ask me.

            Hi all

I need a new back/ruck sack - my budget isn't enough to stretch to a GR1. Ideally it'd be below 100$… I usually hvae the need to carry a laptop, a change of clothes.. and we'll that's it. I take it to work, meetings, on the odd overnight stay, nothing substantial.

            Advice?

For something rugged and extremely durable go for a military pack from eBay.

I recently bought a Patagonia Chacabuco, which happily carries my 17" Dell, powerpack, waterproof jacket, 1L water bottle, book, iPad, phone, etc. which is what I tend to carry on my daily commute; if needed, there's sufficient space to add enough clothes for a 2 day work trip. It's well made, plenty of external cinch straps, couple of attachment point, external shock cord (additional storage for jackets and stuff), nicely padded straps and back, and carries comfortably.
I opted for the all black version as it (just about) blends in for most work situations, and it was  £80 here in the UK, although I'm not sure of the US price.

I'd be looking at a simple day pack from REI or another outdoor retailer, and would go down to the store, see what you like, and what fits you.

Depending on your requirements, I'd either be looking at something relatively small (18 litres / 1000 cubic inches), or something that's a bit bigger (35 litres / 2000 cubic inches).

I've got two rucksacks that I use on a day-to-day basis. One's a tiny Osprey, I think that it's 11 litres, and the other is a Keen drawstring rucksack which is a bit bigger. These are ideal for hauling around gym kit, a laptop, and I've used them for weekends away. REI have something similar to my Keen, the Flashback Daypack, which is pretty cheap, can take a lot of abuse, and I like the look of it.

The larger size is probably a bit big for day-to-day usage, but works well if you're travelling reasonably light for a few days. They also fit into hand luggage if you're flying.

I've just been over to the IH Party in Potsdam with a Mountain Hardware Fluid 32 (this one from REI is similar), but I'm not impressed with the brand. A drawcord has shredded, and one attachment strap fell off shortly after purchase.

Little bit of padding on the bottom panel. No padding on the backside. From what I can tell it's very similar to the Slick Rucks. Just no zippered laptop compartment, no framesheet, no internal Molle, and no elastic internal pocket(there's a simple internal pocket though).

Anyone in Australia looking at purchasing anything from Goruck in the near future so we could combine an order? I'd love a GR1, and maybe a hat, but $62 shipping is a bit steep; if it's over $500 purchase it's free though but I'm not sure I can justify an extra $205 worth of extras to qualify for free shipping! Next question is whether to go with GR1 or SK26…

After months of looking, I think I'm settling on Tom Bihn's Brain Bag as my day pack for the next trip.

+space for a water bottle on the outside (do not like water near electrical stuff)

The MF.haversack is good for local activities, for sure, take it nearly everywhere. I'm heading OS in April for 3 weeks, and need something larger than the haversack, that I can wear around for ~8hrs a day hiking to various things quite fully loaded. The haversack's just not made for that purpose. It'll likely be with me however, and my compliment the BrainBag for quick access..

Cost of shipping to AU > 1/4 of bag cost, as such CBF purchasing any bags and will reuse a Timbuk2 I've got. No need to re-invent things. Less is more or some BS. :).
