Did a bit of research because I am nervous to get back on the trails with my mountain light II's although they may be the most comfortable hiking boots I've owned. I don't feel the ankle support is there when carrying a heavy pack or being on extremely rugged terrain. I spend all my time hiking the AT. I've decided to get another pair of Danner. Hopefully gave better results with these cant afford another incident with that ankle. Behold the danner crater rim

Love them have about 35 miles on them so far break in was easy. Comfort, traction and support are all top notch. Can't believe I'm gonna say this but, they are even better then my Asolo's

A vintage pair that I bought inexpensively online and then cleaned up. Lace-to-toe, copper eyelets, vibram dual core soles, made in Portland, OR. Added orange 3mm reflective climbing cord for laces. (I went to EMS for new laces, and despite having a wall of boots for sale, they had no boot laces in stock. None. So I bought ten feet of cord instead for half the cost of regular laces.)

Hi all,  has anyone had any experience with the Danner Mountain trails or any Danner hikers in terms of waterproofing? I am keen on a pair, maybe the tanne left bank version for hiking and a bit of trudging through deep snow a couple of times a year as well. Do like the Vibergs of course but at half the price the danners look pretty good, any thoughts you could help with please?

                          Cheers. J.

If you want a genuine hiking boot and are in the UK, I would visit a specialist shop and pick up a pair of Brasher or equivalent. Function over form in this case.

Cheers for the advice SM but aesthetics have to come into play too as I'd like to wear them throughout winter in general as well, it's a big ask! Cheers.

I know it's been a while man but I picked up a pair of the Mountain Light Overtons recently and they're awesome. Definitely the best non-mocasin boots I've ever worn. Break in and overall comfort beats my Redwing 877s and work chukkas by a long shot. Durability beats the hell out of the crap Alden calls "boots." Can't recommend them enough. Amazon has some of the smaller sizes on sale plus a 20% off footwear coupon floating around. Came out around $185 shipped.

Thanks LN, Jeff and a bit of info Rafa, I ended up getting a pair of Viberg Hikers in the sample sale and although they were too big, was sold on looks, comfort (Sierra sole is like walking on marshmallows) and being built to hike! So ordered a pair a half size down, 8.5 240 last as apposed to 2040 last on the above pair, prefator leather, beautiful but unfortunately still too big! Now have a pair of 8's, built like tanks and after stomping round NY in them for the past 4 days, extremely comfortable.

I popped in Freeman whilst over the pond and fondled a pair of Danner ML's and for the money I would say they are superb, completely different boot from Viberg. The Danners are solid, much lighter in weight and I would imagine break in immediately whereas the VB's are aesthetically more pleasing (IMO), feel like they are built to flatten cities, take a bit wear to loosen up and as experienced, can be quite weighty towards the end of 10 hours of walking.

Both have their merits but if all you want them for is Hiking you really couldn't go wrong with Danner for the price tag.

                                          Cheers.
