      and so pricey.

Yes, it is.  But I will make at least double what I paid for the PP and the JLC, the profit will pay for most of the Blancpain, the balance can pay off the loan on the Land Rover…...Sorted

I've noticed the prices of a lot of watches have gone up dramatically in the last few years too, which is surprising given the state of the economy.

The Blancpain looks gorgeous, though I might be tempted to get the Jaeger LeCoultre diving watch instead. The Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea and Master Compressor Navy Seals both add an alarm, which is a useful complication.

That said, I really regret not picking up the Rado Sintra Skeleton that I saw on sale in London over the summer. (OK, there were good financial reasons for not doing so.) It's a bit different, and a lot less macho than sports watches. It doesn't look quite so Las Vegas in the flesh either.

Tax return season is coming up and I've got my eye on getting a watch… the ones that have caught my eye so far:

            Tag Heuer Carerra Day Date

Omega Planet Ocean (The big one)

            or the Breitling Navitimer World

Any recommendations?  Anyones I should look on this list?  Breitling is favorite, then not sure about the Omega vs the Tag.  Don't know if the tax return check will cover all of the Breitling though.  Is it worth saving up for?

Personally, I'd go with the Planet Ocean.  It's just a beautiful watch.  The Navitimer is a classic, and to me, is the embodiment of Breitling style.  Unfortunately, I don't really like Breitling style.  If you do, it's really a spectacular watch.  The Tag just seems a bit generic to me.

Of course, all of that is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.;)  Bottom line-go to a store, try each of them on and buy the one that makes you happiest when you look at it on your wrist.  Screw everyone else.

I've tried em all on.  The Breitling fits perfect, feels perfect, but alas is the most expensive ><

Anyone have any of these watches?  How do the clasps hold up- how do they take to beating up (I am a 24 year old who manages to have a drink or two on weekends…) how do they keep time?

The omega was nice, but when I put it on the band seemed a little thin on my wrist.

Tag is prob my least favorite, but is also the cheapest.
Any good other recommendations I should try on before I make the plunge?

This is what I was looking for… except for not what I wanted to hear-  Thanks Giles.  Were you going diving with it/etc/ how did the seal fail?

For some reason watches under 44MM in diameter look small on me.  I've got this slovenian short and stocky build going on and the Rolex just looks tinyyyyyy

People always doubt it until they see it on me and they are like

                          yeah that looks small

Theres really only two things that I don't like about the Planet Ocean

                                  • the big size doesn't come with a black bezel
                                  • the band is a little thin for my likings

Other than that it felt great on my wrist
Anyone have an Omega?  I know they have a great reputation- but any personal stories?

I think you should go for the watch you want, not a compromise. If you need to save up for a while more it's worth it, because if you now make a compromise you'll probably end up getting the watch you'd preferred later on anyway. That's just how it works, usually.

Out of those three I like the Omega most. Not so much I'd ever buy it though.. Have you looked into Panerai? For around 3-4 K€ you could get a nice handwindable classic, like the PAM112? Or if you want to go huge, how about the Breitling Super Avenger?

E: Ooops, Panerais tend to be 4,5 K€ for the base models nowadays… A bit rich for my liking..

E2: You could also look into Bell & Ross. I've always had a soft spot for their instrument line, if I ever have the excess cash I might go for one just for the hell of it. They probably have a very low resell value and since they use very basic ETAs people tend to think they're overpriced but I still like them..

Oh, and regarding how the options you posted keep time: both the Omega and the Breitling are COSC certified so I guess they're accurate enough. My Breitling Steelfish has been within COSC tolerances easily during it's (almost full) first year. I don't fuss about accuracy but would of course be pissed off if it would be outside of the tolerances promised.
