Smokers Anonymous

…once in a blue moon...
I have both done this (gently, but appropriatly to people younger than me, natch) and been told this, the latter more recently as I was at nearby CVS and the guy told me about his cancer and it's effect on his daughter. Then, he proceeded to draw an analogy from the life degrading effects of smoking tobacco to (presumably his??) engaging in illict sex, to which my only response was, 'well, i'm not into illict sex, so that's one less self-contradictory behavior'.
I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing the good/bad/ugly effects of anything, but when the 'think of of children!' hand-waving starts is when I drag extra deep for all the other intangible horrors ignored.
I smoke American Spirits and wish Lucky Strikes still made the rounds.

Point is to make more money for the industry. You smoke more to get to the required nicotine level. But that also means you smoke more paper and shit. They say it is probably better not to smoke lights. The other thing is that they are supposed to give you the illusion that smoking lights is not as bad for you.

Here's a shocker. I'm a celebrity-obsessed person. I love LA road-trips, if not for any other reason – to possibly bump into celebs. But, one time I was curious...so I googled celebrity smokers. Let me say this -- find a celebrity who doesn't smoke ! Gwynneth Paltrow used to be a chain smoker in her 20s (while dating Brad Pitt) but now as a yoga-fanatic, health-nut Mom (married to teetotaler/health freak Chris Martin), Gwynnie has given up nicotine for good, finally. Madonna is pretty much the only celeb who doesn't smoke, and I know that Madonna nagged Gwyn til she gave it up. I was shocked to find that even Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Anniston light up. And everyone knows that beautiful boy Brad Pitt loves to smoke cannabis – cigs are a no-brainer for Brad. Oh yeah, Tom Cruise is another non-smoker...but he's a Scientologist, which sucks.
OK, Angelina Jolie doesn't smoke, but she's mentally insane so what's the diff ? (Anyone who keeps adopting random kids beyond the point of no return is mentally off kilter, IMHO). The point is, it seems like most celebrities do smoke...and I wonder why ? I don't know the answer...they certainly have all the world's resources available at their finger-tips -- to "buy a support network" which can help them quit. Perhaps they enjoy smoking and really don't want to quit ? -
@tfar:

i believe you're thinking of 100s or 72s, for the longer and shorter marlboro stogs.
i think generally, we smoke the same amount of paper per 85mm cig, unless it's a camel wide or whatever because they're all factory rolled.personally, i think marlboro mediums taste the best. but those and reds leave an overhwleming stank on your clothes/hair (more than marlboro lights, imo). marlboro 27s is good and has a kick to it, but each one is different since it's just hot-dog tobacco.
marlboro lights has the best tobacco to smoke unfiltered, for when i have time to roll one to smoke. -
FWIW, when I was 16 – I found a marijuana joint in my dad's jacket pocket. I asked him, "Dad, what's this ?". He explained to me that it was cannabis -- and offered to "introduce me" to the technique. My Dad was a psychiatrist -- and saw great good in cannabis. I turned my dad down, but don't respect him any less for what he did. My dad was the type -- he'd rather I try it under his supervision than not -- and he knew that I was going to try it anyway (which I did, in college -- it was a short-lived phase). At his expense (RIP, Dad) -- I was sufficiently scared away from smoking nicotine, however. And smoking cigs (nicotine) was something my Dad definitely discouraged me from trying -- he never, ever wanted me to go there !

^ hahahaha, check to see if he spits after every drag. hahaha. and damn, i miss packing my friends' smokes.

simon626 – hilarious story about your dad ! I can just picture this old, balding Chinese dude, fumbling with cigarettes, trying in vain to look suave and cool--cracks me up !!!...I have pictures of my handsome dad taking a drag with his Porsche Carrera sunglasses and Armani suit on...and trust me, the man is the epitome of cool.

I smoked for many, many years until in 2006 I gave it up completely. Cold Turkey. I had quit before, even for longer periods of times (couple of years the longest), but started again when I went back to school for my grad. degree. What a pain that was. Trying to get back into cycling and good shape I quit for good. Now I smoke only cigars. Hmmmmmm Cigars. I don't seem to get the addiction to cigars like I did with cigarettes. I can smoke three cigars in a day or go without for weeks.
Smoking a nice Rocky Patel 99 Connecticut vintage right now on my balcony.

nixage, congratulations on overcoming your nicotine-addiction. From the looks of it, you used the same technique my Mom used to quit smoking – rigorous physical exercise. Somehow, once my Mom started regular long distance running, giving up cigarettes was easier. No doubt, exercise increases the circulation of endorphins in your bloodstream -- which helps to combat the pain of withdrawal.

Yes, that's so true, Shubharamani!
When I started riding a lot (like 200-250 miles a week), I no longer even wanted a cig, let alone needed one. It's like your body really cleanses yourself of it all.

I am ashamed to say, that on occasions, I smoke a pipe.

That's actually how I began, at 18! My smoker friends said it was dumb. People still say I act like an old man. It takes patience to (learn to) smoke a pipe though.

Anyone try these before? I just ordered the starter pack from blucigs.com
Trying to quit. My sis who's a doctor says that using these things has a very high success rate
At $15 a pack in NYC, it also saves me a lot of money to switch to these/quit
-
Doug, I have been wanting to try them out. Let me know how it goes. Also, this thread should be merged into http://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=412.0…

A guy i work with has his own small business and sells starter packs up to party packs haha … they're gaining in popularity here in socal

I caught Jody's 16 year old son stealing my cigarettes, so I figured it's time for me to set a good example
Plus, I'm sick of the damn smokers cough in the morning
The other plus about them is that you can smoke them anywhere since it's just water vapor with nicotine and flavoring…including airports and airplanes (I would do it in the bathroom so I don't get any lip) where I find myself spending waaaaay too much time
