It's gorgeous! Great find. At that price, unbelievable. I'd say 50s or early 60s but not sure. The movement functions and layout are similar to the classic Zenith El Primero calibre. If it is that calibre it will demand more than 500 UK$. Some more research will be needed. Might want to post it on one of the watch forums to get their input. A little overhaul is certainly in order. That will probably cost another 3-500 depending on what's to do. New bracelet in alligator should set you back 100 and in calf 50 if you want something nice. So make sure you have those costs in your mind.

Just googled Universal Tri-Compax. Got a bunch of results and prices. See for yourself.

1 week ago, it really is unbelievable.

Universal have now been back to me:

Annivesary Model, made in 1944.  Model # 22.258.

I think that it has been overwound, but nothing a good sort out in Geneva couldn't fix.

Apart from that it is really superb condition.

Your not kidding. As Till has said bare in mind the costs of the restoration that will be needed for this, i think it would be worth it in the end as this is really a lovely piece.

It is, but this'un 's nicer. I prefer the Roman symbols over the standards numbers…

Both are quite nice. I know nothing about them. Tons of no-name brand watches on the market that are actually not bad at all. If the price is alright and you like the looks, go for it.

                        Hey Seul,

If you wanna try out a skeleton watch for a more modest outlay you may wish to check out this:
                        http://www.amazon.com/Swatch-Irony-Automatic-Watch-YAS100G/dp/B000MLNUBI/ref=pd_sbs_watch_1

Apparently it has a genuine (slightly modified) swiss ETA movement .

                        Just a thought.

Universal Geneve said €2-4K.  But he has to find a buyer etc etc.  He is putting severe pressure on me to take it off his hands.  G

So what are you going to do. Given his minimal entry price and the fact he's a friend but still wants to sell it, you might get it below their lowest number. This way both of you lucked out. You get a very nice watch for say 1500 Euro and he made 749 times the initial investment. He still can't complain really. Of course, if he wants to maximize the profit he'd send it in himself, get it fixed up nicely and then sell it for 4000 Euro or just keep it because the story is good. That's what I'd do if I didn't need the money.

Of course, you could buy the watch from him for 1.5k, fix it up for 500. You're in 2k. Sell it for 3k. Get closer to the Union Special. Not very nice towards the friend, though. 😉
