Ugh, yeah, Kafka is heavy stuff. Seul's recommendation is good, the other that comes to (my) mind is "Vor dem Gesetz", engl. "Before the Law", if you just want to try a short story.

Have to say I prefer Elmore Leonard's early work for my western fix…
-
Love Elmore Leonard also, but man cannot live on one type of cowboy mystery alone…
Actually, I've only read a bit of Leonard's 'proper' westerns, I've mostly read his more contemporary stuff. I've got the Raylan Givens books now as well. I guess they're more comparable to the Longmire stuff as they're both contemporary, despite the obvious differences.

Well, from what I understand, he started out only writing western stories as they were well paid at the time. Then he switched to crime novels. And with the advent of Raylan Givens as a 'modern' cowboy, seems to have come fill circle.

Do we have any David Foster Wallace fans around here? I'm about halfway through The Pale King after a good long reading session last night. This was his last, unfinished novel but you wouldn't know it from how 'complete' it feels. I've yet to read his masterpiece Infinite Jest but really enjoyed The Broom of the System.

Sounds like good stuff. I've a back log at the moment, but the next time I'm without a book to read, I'll give him a go.

Looking forward to The Long Earth as well.
