@weftyarn appreciate it, man. The 50 has been with me since like 2015-16, and to this day it's my favorite camera-related purchase.

Beautiful bokeh on the party photos. The colors give it all a very dream-y feeling. How do you like the Fuji rig, by the by? I've been a full-frame Canon man since day 1… I had no idea APS-C had come far enough to get pictures like that.

Candid shots of some devils in a local bar. Canon R5 w/ EF 50mm F/1.2 L. Taken at F/3.2, 1600 ISO. 1/60s on the first one, 1/80s on the second.
I took the mirrorless plunge! Upgraded from my venerable 5D Mk. III (which I'd bought new all the way back in 2014!) to an R5, because they're a lot cheaper here. It's a very different beast for sure, but I love it to bits. Cannot recommend it highly enough, if you're able to throw that kind of money at a camera.

This last one is not my picture, but it is a picture of me (plus a few others) that I think turned out pretty good. Our attached ComCam guy took this picture of me 'popping my cherry' during a recent training evolution. I'm manning the #1 position, pulling the lanyard. Metadata says Canon R6 with an EF 24-105mm F/4L at 24mm, F/4, ISO 640, 1/8000s. Identifying patches/insignia have been obscured, for obvious reasons.

Been offline for a minute, out in the hinterlands of Japan. Feels very, very good to be back in civilization. Lot of things you realize you've been taking for granted when you're out there. Running water… food that hasn't been sitting in storage for 28 months... mattresses...  😉

Anyhow, we hiked Mount Fuji today to celebrate being back! Went up Yoshida and came down Gotemba, if that means anything to any of y'all. Lots of blisters and knee pain for all involved, but shit'll buff. Tokyo tomorrow, hopefully including a pilgrimage to the IH Japan store(s).

Oh lawdy, I did not intend to make that much of the thread about me personally. My b, folks, but thank you all.

      @endo:

We are not used to guns privately possessed over here. That's why I always get an uncomfortable feeling when I see someone handling a gun. I'm sure you're doing it with a lot of responsibility @Jestocost

Ah. I grew up in a house with more firearms than people in it. Started shooting when I was twelve. Most of the people I interact with on a daily basis come from similar backgrounds, so I forget sometimes how unusual that kind up upbringing actually is. I apologize for getting defensive like that. Very US-centric of me.

@goosehd hello, fellow rust belter! I'm from Missouri, but the story there is much the same. Glad you made it out alright.

@mclaincausey at the risk of toeing the line on the 'no politics' rule, my general opinion is that it's better to have it and not need it, than to risk needing it and not having it. Though I understand why many would disagree. I don't regret my career choices, but my personal preference would be for it to not be necessary for anyone to do this just to get their degree. Maybe someday…

      @endo:

Don't know much about guns. This one doesn't look like made for hunting, rather for killing people.
      Can't really see the fun.

All guns are tools to make living things into dead ones. That this one is short-barreled and is made from polymer and aluminum instead of wood and steel makes it slightly more suited to one version of that task than another, but plenty of people hunt or just shoot paper with the same kind of rifle (minus the auto sear, obviously, but you can't see that from the outside).

…that said, "fun times" was definitely meant a little sarcastically. I enjoy the fine art of rifle marksmanship as much as any other hick, but I do this for a living because there's no way in hell I'm going to college without the GI Bill, not because I'm itching to use that thing on anybody.

@Nkwkfld looks delicious. Always wanted to go to France. Impressive as all hell that you did all that distance on a bike, too.

Running ranges this week. Lots of barricade drills (pictured), some CQB practice, a little bit of night fighting coming up this evening. Fun times all around.

Would like to commend @Jordonf9 and @leatherdenimcanvas on a great purchasing experience. Good prices, good communication, items received exactly as described, and willing to deal with my weird shipping situation. Thank you again, gents.

Just took the wrapping off of this… something of a personal statement on why I'm changing careers soon. Text says "RATS GET FAT / WHILE BRAVE MEN DIE".

@Endo "On GP" by Death Grips. Fair warning if you search it up, their music is kind of abrasive. Very much a 'love it or hate it' kinda thing.

    • RE: That's Jokes

A good ol' boy from Alabama is visiting at his parents' house to break the news that he's proposed to his girlfriend. He tells them all the reasons he wants to marry this gal – looks, personality, still got all her teeth, the whole 9 yards -- and they seem thrilled until it accidentally slips that his new fiancée was still a virgin when they met.

His father immediately gets serious and demands, "call off the wedding immediately. You can't marry this woman."

Shocked, the son asks, "but pa, why? I love her!"

His father replies, "son, if she ain't good enough fer' her own family, she damn sure ain't good enough for ours!"

It isn't high art, but it's a photo I like quite a bit.

      Canon 5d Mk III w/ 24-105 F/4

@weftyarn the B&W definitely has better contrast, but I don't dislike the color version. It's 'moodier', in a way. Either way it's a great shot.

Playing sloshball versus some of the other guys out here (I'm the cameraman, not the batter pictured). For the uninitiated, sloshball is softball, except you can't take the field unless you'd fail a breathalyzer test.

    • RE: Random questions to which you seek an answer

You definitely have a point about the release schedule of the cuts skewing their sales numbers. I'm new to this, so I defer to your greater knowledge of Iron Heart on that front. I think the rankings given in the UHR thread were since 2019… I wonder if they're the same for 2021 or 2022 YTD.

As for the fading (lol) popularity of super-skinny jeans, you're probably onto something there, but from my (very limited) viewpoint the IRL replacement for them seems to be more slim-tapers like the 777 rather than outright relaxed and straight-leg cuts, at least for men. The pendulum could very well continue to swing towards wider legs, though. I am not versed enough in fashion trends to speculate, but for my part, I would welcome a '999' cut with even more generous waist:thigh ratios than the 888  😉

Most recent piece, done back in Hawaii. A memento of a darker time in my life, and a song that helped get me through it. 100 fake internet points to anyone who guesses it.

@Brock that's a beautiful piece. They did a phenomenal job on the shading, especially with the clouds. Mad respect for being able to get that done in one shot.

    • RE: Random questions to which you seek an answer

Not to soapbox, but: I don’t think it’s so much that the forum is “ahead” or “behind” the market, so much as the forum is a self-selecting population with different tastes and needs than the broader IH-buying public. Single-focus BBCode forums are something of a relic from before the Internet consolidated around the current social media behemoths. I would wager that most people familiar enough with the concept to be here instead of on /r/rawdenim are older (less likely to want to wear skinny jeans), have relatively unconventional or non-mainstream attitudes towards clothes and technology (ditto) or live a life that lets them spend a lot of time online (less likely to be able to wear skinny jeans). Thus, we adore the 888, 805s and 634, but the 555, 666 and 777 actually sell.

I don’t have demographic data on the IH forums to back up what I’m saying here, obviously. If anyone has real numbers I’d love to hear that I’m wrong. But anecdotally, I’m a very young millennial and I don’t know anyone else IRL who uses a forum like this. Some of the elder gen z guys I’m in charge of think I’m an old man because I spend my (limited) downtime at work on Reddit instead of Instagram or TikTok, lol.

I’m very curious to see how the demographics of the forum shift once the migration happens, though. I know a lot of people who don’t own PCs anymore and only use their smartphone. Maybe the mobile-optimized site will help with reeling them in?

    • RE: IH-888-XHS - 25oz Selvedge Denim Medium/High Rise Tapered Cut Jeans - Indigo

@Jeanmoreau washing a lot will get you there eventually, but AFAIK these never get quite as soft as IH’s other denims. From what I’ve heard, the 21oz gets the comfiest, but I don’t know that firsthand.

That said, I would submit to you that a better long-term solution may be to adopt a more active lifestyle, if you are not disabled in a way that prevents you from doing so. In addition to the myriad health benefits of exercise, you will also get much better fade patterns if you wear them hard.

    • RE: Iron Heart Products - What do you think we should make?

In re: the hot-weather shirting discussion, I would look into stuff made out of Ramie fabric. I have a couple Outlier shirts made from it that are (IMHO) unbeatable in hot, humid conditions. I'm surprised more manufacturers haven't started using it, tbh.
