Yea, Obession was brilliant! It definitely lived up to the hype. The actor who played Nicki (Inde Navarrette) was the star of the film - really unsettling performance...
She only made $20k from it, which is a shame since it made $450m at the box office, but it did have a tiny budget in fairness

@mclaincausey Well-put. And I agree, books will always be superior

RE: Moviesposted in Hobbies and Pastimes
You're right, realism is probably the wrong word to use. But strapping a Rolex on Odysseus isn't suddenly permissible just because there's a cyclops. Homer's epic is still grounded in the ancient Mediterranean world.

The teeth and dialogue are more of an issue because they're part of how the characters are actually presented within the world of the film. Really modern-looking dentistry and grooming stand out when everything around them looks ancient and realistic. At least to me, the race of an actor is far less relevant - and whether an actor is trans is even less relevant.
Yea, realism isn't inherently important. But Nolan clearly goes out of his way to establish realism throughout the film, which is why the modern details stand out a little. Anyway, very good film, these are just small things!

RE: Moviesposted in Hobbies and Pastimes
The film looks and sounds magnificent, but it never decides on what sort of adaptation it wants to be.
The sets and costumes all seem to strive for realism, but that realism is undermined by details that feel obviously modern - from gleaming white teeth to Jon Bernthal's bald-and-bearded look. As you say @endo, these things are important, because the rest of the film is asking to be taken as something serious and authentic.
The film is most immersive when it becomes strange and mythic, and those moments make the conventional-Hollywood-action feel ordinary in comparison. A stylised, even avant-garde interpretation might have worked better.
In terms of performances, Hathaway is very good, but Damon and Holland don't offer much apart from being Damon and Holland. Nolan’s limitations with female characters are still apparent, the dialogue lets it down in places, and some scenes are a little drawn-out.
Ultimately, Nolan is judged more harshly than most directors and he is simply held to a higher standard. Personally, the film was good, very good - but it wasn't the masterpiece that I was anticipating.

RE: Introduce Yourself Hereposted in Some Really Boring (but useful) and Some Really Interesting Stuff!
Definitely not especially relevant to this thread, but I wanted to post a small follow-up to my intro.
I recently managed to find what I’m fairly certain was my Dad’s old profile on here - @dognobbler
He hadn't posted, but the username and an old SuFu profile using the same handle and profile icon that he always used, all line up.
It also looks like he did own at least one pair of Iron Hearts - the Self Edge x Iron Heart SEXIH07's - judging by an old SuFu post

Anyway, interesting to me - thought I'd share. Sorry to mods if this is clogging up the thread!

RE: Introduce Yourself Hereposted in Some Really Boring (but useful) and Some Really Interesting Stuff!
Hi all, new member here.
I'm Felix from London - currently at uni elsewhere, studying Maths & Philosophy. I'm nineteen, so probably on the younger end of the people in here!
I got into Japanese denim from my Dad, who used to run a denim 'blog' in the mid-2000s. He passed away a few years ago unfortunately, but he left behind stacks upon stacks of Japanese denim (all too large for me sadly) in his wardrobe.
I wonder if he was a customer of Iron Heart at all or if he was ever a part of this forum.
Anyway, I would say I'm pretty content with my collection of Japanese denim now after a year or so going down the rabbit hole. Initially, I started out buying second-hand via Vinted and eBay. Once I worked out what sort of cut and weight I like (straight and mid-heavyweight), I went and bought some pairs from Rivet & Hide. In my rotation currently, excluding second-hand purchases, are:
Iron Heart 21oz 634 IH-634S
Pure Blue Japan 14oz Indigo/Black XX-003-IDBK
Samurai 18oz 'Kinari' (Ecru) S510SC-KIThanks for reading! Looking forward to being a part of this forum!
Felix
