I missed the original post, so a belated good luck to @Appfaff.
Speaking of careers, I had a meeting with a recruitment agent yesterday who has a potentially interesting role. It's with a startup here in Melbourne.
The trouble is that the CTO is a 22 year old "whizzkid", and although he's going to be heading overseas to do a PhD, he's possibly going to be involved.
What concerns me is that the first thing he did when he got hired was rewrite the entire app, because he thought that the old one was messy. Never rewrite working code is up there with never get involved in a land war in Asia. So I could see myself butting heads with him.
(I'm not sure that asking him to justify why he rewrote the software will be a good interview question either.)
In fact, I'd argue that the way to run a good software team is to have good processes in place (coding standards, documentation, testing), facilitate communications between people, and have decent, stable tools. This isn't as sexy as hiring the mythical rockstar programmers (I don't think that I've ever met one), and using a cutting-edge technology stack, but this boring approach will get better results than 90% of development shops out there.

Ok, here is a first, and thought other people who have been in similar situation would find it funny….
So last week, one of the very well dressed Norwegian gentlemen on the forum requested my help to proxy a pair of ski boots from the US for him. Anytime I can help someone out and deceive the government (customs) at the same time, I am 100% game, so I quickly obliged.
Anyways, the Boots were supposed to arrive tomorrow, but arrived today in a menagerie of boxes filled with xmas gifts for the twins that we ordered on Cyber monday, so I didn't even notice they arrived early (and never even second guessed the fact that I had to sign for what I thought was $30 worth of kids puzzles). Anyways, I am at work and my wife calls me furious, and says "Adam, Why the F*** did you buy $XXX Ski Boots for??, you don't even Ski!"
I then explained the scenario to her and she quickly accepted by explanation...almost too easily mind you. So note to self, when you proxy something for someone - either explain the scenario to your wife BEFORE the fact, or be more proactive about hiding the box when it arrives.
Also, anyone had advice on how to trick norwegian customs about a pair of 12 pound ski boots... haha

Went on a tour of a local elementary school that my ex and I are thinking of sending our boy to next Fall. It's a public school so I really had to lower my expectations quite a bit. It wasn't helpful when I took my son to use the bathroom and there were flies present, nor were the huge class sizes encouraging. Academically speaking the school has high ratings so my son should be fine. Can't believe i'm being anal about where my son goes to elementary school, especially after paying for daycare for the last 4.5 yrs.

Yeah, I’m the same way dude. Since we have twins, we pay a crap ton in child care costs right now, but have already agreed to simply take that budget and apply it to the best private school it could pay for.

We just moved to a different city after I got a new job, and we picked where we were going to live almost entirely on which school district we thought would do the best job with our son. And it's no exaggeration to say we would have scuttled the whole thing if we weren't comfortable with his school. So I'm with you guys on this one.

my ex originally wanted to send our boy to an elementary school that has a Spanish immersion program. Nothing wrong with wanting your child to be bilingual but I wanted to give our son a choice. I think foreign language immersion is great and would give our son a leg up in the world, but at the same time, I want him to master English first and then go from there. The downside is that kindergarten only runs from 8am to 2:30pm so we'll still have to pay for an aftercare program.
The next step will be to teach him how to wipe his own arse so he can use the bathroom by himself

My friend when he was drunk at bars in college used to tell girls that he was part of a male stripper troupe called “sexy assailants.” He claimed that they were used as a surprise gift for bachelorettes. They would break into the unwitting bachelorette’s house, tie her up, and only then reveal the strip show. I wonder how many of these girls lost sleep worrying that their friends might “gift” them a visit from the sexy assailants.
