The kershaw blur is a classic. If you ever watch "Good Eats", you'll see that Alton Brown carries one too. I think the steel on yours is SG2, so it'll hold an edge for a really long time. Great choice

Thanks for the info Doug! Yeah I look to you guys for a little info because I am not up on it all. It has done well thus far. I really need to flip the clip though…

My roster's starting lineup: (at work, no camera, oh hai internet!)
              new baby: CRK Insingo (EDC)

This Insingo has really, really sold me on CRK. I sort of "got it" before when handling friends' sebenzas, but didn't see why they were worth 2x my benchmades, but I have to say there's just something… I don't know, maybe Japanese-style spiritual about owning something that so absolutely accomplished on every level. Hedonic value.

Benchmade Bunch: Tanto, comboedged Nimravus. Model #42 Balisong. 921 Switchback (mine is LTD edition with d2 steel, bt coating, grey handle...  used the shit out of this knife to the point of wearing most of the bt coating off.. stashed away somewhere so someday I can pull it out and cherish the memories.)

I feel like I would EDC the balisong if general legality/sketchiness matters weren't a concern(read: I were less of a pussy): its an eminently practical design, probably in the end the most secure lock mechanism it's possible to get, and the 42 has the pedigree of a classic, predecessors under previous corporate incarnation Pacific Cutlery's being the Ur-Balis…

Mr Fixit is always, always in my backpack, along with krazy glue, gorilla tape, paracord, zip ties, a bike tube, pump and toolkit, packs of AA and AAA batteries, a police scanner and a headlamp.
Leatherman Charge TTi (brand new thanks to their kind of unbelievable warranty policy - the company's attitude seems to mirror the tool in its willingness to git 'r done no matter what the fuck just happened. Ubiquitous but still underrated American classics.)

Lost Loves (stolen, misplaced, etc.) include a blue anodized BM42, a standard 921 switchback, and my recently ganked 941… 😢 -> I obviously have a thing for Osborne's Axis-lock creations.
There's a random drawer at home with dozens more lessers, but aside from my father's vietnam bayonet-shank, these are the prettiest ones.

              Things I lust after:
knives by Flavio Ikoma, particularly those with recurved blades... my ideal knife would have both IKBS and AXIS, be S30V, and look like flavio's knives...

Nice, Lando! I'm a huge fan of Ken Onion's Blur design. I've personally never been really comfortable with SpeedSafe and thumbstuds together, but it works well for a lot of people for sure.

Let us know if those TracTec handle inserts give your IH's any issues?

commodorewheeler, I am actually really liking the SpeedSafe and ThumbStud combo! Shit is intimidating. And yes, the TracTec does grip to the IH quite a bit but I like that. I tend to lose things too often…

Good to hear, glad you are liking that knife. From a shape and profile standpoint, I think the Blur is one of the best knife designs ever.

Eli, I am thinking yes too. A small Sebenza should be perfect for you.

You really don't want an assisted knife for diving. Salt water will get into the speed safe mechanism and corrode it.

I would recommend one of the Spyderco Salt models if you're going to be taking the knife into the water.

The more complicated the knife, the more space salt water can get into and the more likely you'll get rust

I don't like the Axis lock on a Benchmade for salt water exposure because if the lock mechanism corrodes, it can get stuck or completely fail and you'll lose your fingers

If what you're looking for is solely to cut rope in water while surfing, you might want to consider a shroud cutter. I know Zero Tolerance and Benchmade both make them

For regular everyday carry, I like Kershaw for the low end and Chris Reeve for the higher end. Kershaw manufactures Zero Tolerannce knives and those are great knives

As for a pocketknife for sd, I'm not one of the guys that advocates that. 27 years of martial arts training has shown that a concrete sidewalk to slam someones head into until submission is a more realistic method of stopping a bad guy.

The Griptilian is a great knife. I bought Jody's son one as his first pocketknife. Despite me showing him tons of other knives in the meantime, the Griptilian is still his favorite

Oh wow, thanks for the Info Doug. Going by what you just told me, i think i'll keep a fixed blade diver's knife and also have a regular everyday carrier. Will freshwater (i.e. mountain stream water) corrode The spring assisted folders?

What would be an ideal EDC that could handle most non salt water situations as well as quite useful in a self defense situation?

I recently used my gerber to pierce about 10 cans of budweiser so that a bunch of people could shotgun them together. My knife is all gunky now ):

Simon, I think you have the right idea about using fixed blades in and near water. Unless you are using a folder that is specifically designed for use in water, like the Spyderco Salt that Doug mentioned, any folder, assisted or not, is going to have corrosion eventually if you get it wet and don't clean it afterwards, even if it is just freshwater.

Personally, I use a fixed blade when I know that I'm going to be in or near water. They are much easier to clean than folders (You have to take apart a folder to clean it if it gets wet).

It has arrived, CHRIS REEVE 'Sebenza' (small) - with a big, HUGE thank you to mod DougNG for hooking me up...

So stoked. It is light and just big enough for me. Feels amazing. I'm gonna replace the black chord with an Iron Heart tan leather loop/ noose (as you find on the jackets and such) though…

Yep - already deeply in love... And practicing my one-hand opening  😉

                                            THANK YOU DOUG!..
