Here’s a little project I’ve been meaning to do for a while, which was expedited due to a friend’s comments last week…

BACKSTORY - I’m new to the world of quality denim, but I’ve been studying!  And being a big guy doesn’t help – 6’-4” and 330 lbs., so it’s not that easy just to order a pair online!  But I’ve already had a custom pair of Cone Denim jeans made to my specs that are bad-ass, (thanks Jerry Lee!) so the ball is rolling!  But I haven’t broke these out yet as it’s been plenty hot this summer, so they haven’t been soaked yet since I haven’t needed to wear them yet.  To tide me over I bought a pair of 1993 vintage DS US-made 501’s to “get my feet wet”.  I have took the time to soak these and it turns out that I love them and they will surely serve me well for a long time coming!

Anyway, while wearing my pimp OS Carolina moc toe work oxfords the other day along with my 1st wear STF 501’s, my friend made the comment that I looked like I had used a Sears catalog from the ‘70’s to dress that day!  Not being shaken, I explained to him why I liked the stuff I had on, but it was a lost cause - he wasn’t feeling it, but no biggie, he does his thing and I’ll do mine.  That’s why they make different styles, right?  We’re always ragging each other about this or that, but one particular comment about my shoes did stick; he said they looked like LUGS!  Well, that was plenty enough reason for me to do something about my shinny, new shoes!

Easy fix, that was planned anyway, Obenauf’s to the rescue!  I think they turned out great!  The color is awesome, and should only get better with future applications, and the switch to leather laces really made a big difference as well!  And speaking of the laces - it’s cool to know that I actually MADE the custom horse hide laces!  OK, now I feel better about myself; my dignity has been restored!  Ha-ha!  I just can’t wait for Friday (causal day at work) when I’ll be rocking the “modded” Carolina’s (which I’m sure he will think are a new, different pair!) AND the 501’s, with a CUFF this time!  RESPECT!

Moonshine: they look really, really kickarse now… Rawhide laces = always a good idea. And so is treating your leather with Obenauf's LP... Has darkened up nicely indeed.
