Good luck tomorrow @Nik @Dmart at your respective races.
Here in Brighton I’m feeling a little anxious as my training went to shit a few weeks ago with tendonitis. Gonna race, but will have to play it safe and kiss my desired pace bye-bye. Ah well.

@jerkules i am suffering from plantar fasciitis and lost 3 weeks of quality training. Kissed my sub 90 good bye but hope I manage a sub 95 or 100. am more worried about the 5C ~40 Fahrenheit. A bit too cold for me but better than too hot.

@Dmart yikes sorry to hear that. Sub 95 is an amazing achievement though, I’d be well happy with that!
I’d take cold over heat any day, but we arrived at the coast today and there are 20 MPH wind gusts. Just hoping that tomorrow they’re providing tailwind only 😂

I am bit disappointed, finished in 1:39:27. The engine could go faster, but my legs were stiff and hard as well from the cold and started hurting after 4K 🙈

Amazing work guys, incredible times. Should both be proud.

My more humble Marathon time was 4:04. If I’m honest, miles 18-24 were horrendous. My pace up to that point was between 8:15 and 8:30 per mile and I felt pretty good. At mile 18 something happened, my legs felt strong but I just had no “juice”. Pace went down to like 10 minutes per mild, sometimes slower.
                        Fucking knackered now though.

@jerkules still a great achievement. 26 miles is not a walk in the park!
Your issue sounds like fueling problems. Did you have some electrolytes and sufficient carbs?

Well done @Dmart and @jerkules for struggling through the challenges to finish.
I’ve had to quit a race before due to hypothermia and that shit is no joke. If you kept going and finished @Dmart thats a job really well done. There will always be another race to get better conditions and wear different kit to be able to have a good time. And @jerkules I agree it sounds like you might have needed more carbs and salt, but again if you had no juice and despite that still ran for four hours that is a huge achievement. With the injury and training issues to still finish is massive.
I am moving very slowly today and developed a runny nose yesterday so now time to see how recovery goes. We’re in Paris for the week so there may or not be multiple baguette traditions consumed daily. Might also check out Distance Running Shop, looks like it might be cool.
                            Hope your recovery goes well.

Me too, I feel stiff and overall not too well. I am on the indoor bike as we speak/write just to get some blood flow in the legs.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I messed up my fuelling. I just took what I’d take on a “normal” long run, and extrapolated it out over 26 miles. I want to do another, and will put a bit more focus on this side of things.
I’m still pretty pleased though. I was aiming for 4 hours, and would’ve been very happy with anything sub-4. Those extra 4 minutes haven’t messed with my feelings of accomplishment, cause as a first timer you never really know if you’ll even complete the race.

Hope your recoveries go well. How long do you guys leave it before getting our for another easy run?

I go off feel and run whenever I feel ready. I've done runs the day after races, but no way that was happening today. Still stiff. I did a lot of walking today and might check out the local piscine tomorrow.

@jerkules in a rare crossover between the forum and real life, I found out earlier that one of my colleagues was playing in his steel band somewhere along the Brighton course yesterday. I haven’t heard them, so I don’t know if they were encouraging as intended or just made you want to run away!

@ARNC cool I saw them! I was in a weird place mentally by that point, but IIRC they were around mile 24-25ish. Right towards the end. Any and all support like that is encouraging, it’s a little mood boost to think all these guys have come out to keep spirits up. Even if it ain’t your thing, it’s still super nice and takes your mind off the pain 😂

Music along the route is a big plus. Lots of bands, do's, and drum groups along the tour in Paris. As someone who usually scoffs at a drum group, while running on Sunday I totally fell for the physical power of the beat, especially at one point where a group of about 30 drummers played at the entrance to a dark tunnel along the Seine. Being underground intensified the beat and helped me pick up the pace. At another point in the Bois de Vincennes a band was playing a not horrible cover of Little Richard, and that too got a lot of us going. A guy behind me kept singing the song for the next few minutes after we couldn't hear the band anymore. So yeah, music along the way is really great. Maybe the best bit in Paris was the techno with laser lighting in one of the tunnels.
