I know this topic has been brought up before over the course of this thread, but I don’t remember the conclusions reached so here goes:

Smoke Jumper (4811 last) in 8.5E fits me just about perfectly, with no heel-slip at all even when brand new and a nice snug fit all around, with enough room to wiggle my toes; which size should I go for in Semi-Dress (55 last)? The same as SJ or perhaps half a size smaller (still in E width)? I know, YMMV and all that, but many of you have experience with both of those lasts so interested in your insights.

      Cheers.

@Crit_Obs I wear the same size (12.5D) in the semi-dress, bounty hunter (smoke jumper with semi-dress last) and smoke jumper.  For me the smoke jumper is just a bit more roomy, but it's a negligible difference.

Thanks! That’s exactly how I imagine it to be looking at the profiles of these 2 lasts… But some folks ( @Megatron1505 being one, if my memory serves) have noted that SD runs bigger, and that they need to size down going from SJ to SD. There was even someone who, after establishing his size for SJ, went ahead and ordered a custom-made pair of SD in that same size, only to learn he would be ”swimming” in them as they turned out hopelessly too big; this last feller might have shared his story on another forum.

@EastWest have a pair of SDs I could see myself grabbing for the spring/summer…

Megatron's feet are as strange as the rest of him.

I wear the same size (10D) in the semi-dress and swing last, and in Viberg and Wesco, for that matter.

@Crit_Obs Ha! Of course everyone's feet are different - but I'd trust the sizing on your SJs if you are happy with them.

Hi @Crit_Obs I would echo most of the above. Overall they fit fairly similar in length and width but for me the SJ’s have a bit more volume across the top of the foot/ toes whereas the SD’s feel slightly wider at the front of the foot but more shallow in height. Send me a mail if you want to chat more on particular boots and sizes, there can be some variation due to leather thickness etc..

                Cheers.

Okay, decision time is nigh; before I proceed to grab the semi-dress, I must ask, does anyone have experience with the Northwest last? Anything to consider regarding sizing?  I’ve been vehemently opposed to the now-ubiquitous crepe soles, but as of late I’ve begun to wonder… Maybe the comfort would be worth stomaching the peculiar looks.

I wouldn't buy something you didn't like the looks of because you think they will be measurably more comfortable. I find the regular vibram sole/standard heeled White's to be supremely comfortable. I love the arch ease design.

Yeah, I like it a lot as well, which makes the Northwest seem like a potential step back since it’s the last with the least pronounced arch support.

What I meant by the comfiness in the case of crepe soles was the combination of light weight and substantial cushioning, i.e. the ”sneakers for grown-ups” line of thinking. 😎

I have a couple bounty hunters that I love, but I wanted something a little lighter and less bulky. I ordered a pair of White's Military Police Service Boot and have been pretty happy with them. I miss the crazy arch-ease thing (didn't see that coming, to be honest) and no speed hooks is killing me. Other than that, they seem like really nice pieces of well-clicked chromexcel and a good last.

These seem like they're pandering to the Viberg crew, but I figured I'd give them a shot before I dropped 30% more on Vibergs. Not sure how I feel about the toe caps, but I'm getting used to them.

Yes, I asked Bakers if these had the arch-ease, and was disappointed they do not.  I LOVE the arch-ease.  Also, looks like this are close trim (single row stitched) - yes?  And agree, these look to be a bit "Vibergy" with all that, and the lower heel, and the Dainite sole - but still good looking boots for the money, for sure.  And being a bit "Vibergy" is not so bad - nice to have options… Their other new boot, the Foreman (I think), doesn't have the arch-ease either.

Yeah, close trim. At first arch-ease seemed impossible to get used to…now I hate not having it.
