I'm a fanatic only in spirit. I'm not rich enough to spend $800 on a knife yet. They are extremely nice high quality knives but I have to settle for his cheaper designs.

Shane, once a year Rick comes to the NY/NJ area for a show and raffles off chances to buy one of his knives. You can get one directly from him for about $400

Shane and I are going to that knife show 3/4/13

      Doug, you going with us?

Sorry, busiest time of the year for me. Thanks for the invite

Is Rick going to that one? It's the East Coast Custom Knife Show, right? I know RJ Martin used to always attend that one.

If you want an amazing custom knife, def check out that guy

Edit: yep, looks like Rick is going to that show. Say hi for me, Rick and I have been friends for many years

Uh, if it's the ECCKS in NJ, the dates are 3/1-3/3, and showing up on the last day of a show is kind of a waste of time. Everything is sold out by then

If you like the Delica, and since you like small knives, you might like this one:

                Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in G10

I keep one handy by the front door to open packages

                  Looks a bit too small I reckon… Was eyeballing this though. 6.8" (13/16" = .8125" right?).

                    Spyderco Persistence?

My son keeps one of those in the emergency road kit in his car. It's a nice knife, though I have learned to dislike the steel. Doesn't take a particularly sharp edge (though it comes back to a workable edge easy) and it tends to rust. Leaving it in the car has and will continue to be an issue, because the car is cold at night then warms up when it's on, so it accumulates condensation on the blade

I think this type of steel is fine if you use it every day, not great for the purpose we bought the knife for

Edit: I'm going to modify my statement that it's doesn't take a good edge. It's takes a pretty good edge, comes with an edge that's better than most, but it doesn't get to a level of sharpness that I'm completely satisfied with. For $20 more in a Delica, you get a hair whittling edge with some work.

The Persistence is made in China, btw. The pivot action is not nearly as smooth as the made in the USA or Seki City Japan made knives

I still wonder how they can sell the Delica for such an astonoshing price, keeping in mind it's Japanese made... I know it's an old model (well: 1990 was a long time ago I guess), but still... Quite remarkable...

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic knife for $30. The lockup is perfect and it's price point is perfect for abusing or neglecting

Re: the Delica's price: the steel is a tried and true steel, VG10. Been around for awhile. I like it a lot personally. Takes a great edge and sharpens easily. Doesn't rust easily and will hold an edge for at least a day of regular (not heavy) use. Also, the handles are injection molded, so after the initial investment in molds (I think the owner said it's several thousand dollars), the cost is mainly the material, and FRN is relatively inexpensive.

So between the low cost of a steel that's been around for awhile and low manufacturing costs, the knife comes out to about 50 bucks

Btw, the Delica has been around for 20 years, but the Delica 4 has only been around for a handful. It's had a number of improvements over the years. It's a very evolved design
