I learned my lesson. It won't happen again. At least I will try very, very hard not to let it happen again.

Shoque: I problably won't buy the Wii U. The controller seems too "gimmicky" for me. Plus there are no games exclusive to the console that I really want to play (with a litte exeption for ZombieU). I hardly ever use my Wii (I still giggle of the name) anymore. That, and there are too many games to play elsewhere.

I might be a bit too fond of playing. Have any of you experienced this:

Scene: I'm playing Mass Effect 3 in front of the telly. The girlfriend enters the livingroom naked talking in her sexy voice:

Gf: Do you want to come to the bedroom and keep me with company?
Me: Sure, just give me two minutes. I just want to finish this boss.
      Gf: Ok sexy.
(time passes I'm still playing, girlfriend comes stamping angrily back to the livingroom, not talking in her sexy voice)
Gf: God dammit, you said it was only going to take a couple of minutes, I've been waiting for half an hour!

If this  correlates over to when you are married you will end up having hallway sex. That is when you pass each other in the hall and say fuck you!!! Being married over 10 years my only suggestion would be try and avoid this at all costs.

Well on my way to 100%-ing FarCry 3. Great fun and probably the prettiest environments I've ever seen in a game.

Hasn't felt like a chore. I love big, open sandbox games that let you go off and do your own thing. Also, hunting leopards with a bow is…tense.

As a married guy who has spent countless hours in Elder Scrolls III, Halo, Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, I will say that the above scenario has happened.

I learned my lesson and it will not happen again.  It sucks to shut down immediately and lose your progress in the game, but there are far, far worse things that can happen…

My wife and son bought me  WiiU for the holidays. Unfortunately it is still sitting in my living room unopened.

Everyone always goes on about final fantasy VII. It's a great game and one I had loads of play time on in 5th-8th grade.  I know how to destroy ruby/emerald weapon and how to get all lucky 7s every battle.  Me and a friend used to beat it over a weekend for fun. But I think 5 and 6 are better games. If you like FFVII you should also check out star ocean 2 and Xenogears (forget about xenosaga).  My favorite jrpg of all time is tales of phantasia but good luck playing it in English without using a snes emulator (the gba version sucks).  After the snes/ps1 generation I feel like the genre lost steam or something. Maybe I just lost interest though.  I love the old ps1 and snes rpgs!

Ah good games were mentioned here! They all had great stories. I will add Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, Front Mission 3, Thousand Arms, Wild arms, Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Vagrant Story, Suikoden 2, Breath of Fire 4, Persona 2, Brave Fencer Musashi, Vanguard Bandits and Final Fantasy Tactics.

I honestly feel as if the games nowadays don't compare to the old days as well; no offense to anyone of course.

Some great games you got listed there.  FF5 is my favorite game in the series.  As for other JRPGs I just recently replayed through Suikoden II, so fantastic.

As for modern RPG's I tend to agree for the most part, although I hear Ni No Kuni is pretty great.  The art alone looks worthy enough of a play through.  Just need to find a PS3 to play it on…

I still think chrono cross isn't much next to chrono trigger… Still a good game. Arabit, a lot of the games you have mentioned are totally great... The problem with games today is the budget is just too huge, and corporations have pretty much taken over the industry. Developers get eaten up all the time/get fired. Fat cats like bobby kotick make sure to maximize profit instead of playability and fun... This goes for all genres of games. Kotick has been quoted as saying his aim was to take all the fun out of developing video games for the sake of profit (not a direct quote but it's there... You can look it up). Just look at what they've done to diablo and world of Warcraft in such a short time after being bought out.  A lot of older games were works of passion, a rarity these days. It's really no wonder to me that most games suck now and only have a 1 maybe 2 year life cycle. It's basically the same problem American television has. I could probably nerd rant about this for an hour so I'll stop before I have an aneurism.

Those works of passion are still coming out if you know where to look though.  I definitely agree that what the "big" studios have been putting out has been generally lackluster, but the indie scene is thriving pretty hard right now and kickstarter/indiegogo have definitely been helping out with this.  A little lacking in RPGs maybe, but some great games have come out recently.  Fez, on XBLA is a great adventure/puzzler.  FTL is a frustratingly awesome roguelikeish game.  Endless Space is an excellent 4X game.  All the humble indie bundles have great games for their releases.  Plus a sequel for Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, a basketball themed RPG, is in development too and it's looking like it could be fantastic.

Basically, indie gaming is really where it's at right now.

As emceeQ mentioned - has anybody played Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch? It's a collaboration between Level 5 and Studio Ghibli which probably means great gameplay and great graphics. It has gotten great reviews. It hasn't been released here in Europe yet, but I'm planing to buy it. It's a Playstation exclusive though.

As for the indies vs "big studios" I have been dissapointed with a lot of the big game releases lately. But I haven't really caught the indie-bug either. Instead I started playing old classics, such as Knights of the Old Republic and Alpha Centauri. There are a lot of classics on Steam and gog.com.
