Went to my local jewelry and watches shop… Good folks... Found a decent steel bracelet for 30 €, I was stoked to find a replacement for my smelly leather one this cheap... Woman goes to attach it to my watch... Returns after a minute... Turns out Weil uses special detachment pieces that almost guarantee that you can't use any bracelets but theirs on your watch... "Oh: and a real Weil steel bracelet will set ya back about 250 €"...

They're getting some more bracelets in next week, one which has a curved bar, so let's hope that'un will work  😠

        That sucks.
I hate it when manufacturers pull that kind of stunt.  Puts me off buying their product entirely.

You should have popped open Finn's shipment and checked that one out, just for the heck of it. 😉

I did… DUH  😉 Finn knows the deal - I always put on his stuff first... Nice watch, really nice, but not my thing... Not into divers and all that...

So yeah: cheap Seiko here I come I guess...

While you may not be interested in that particular model, it does give you a good idea of the general quality in their watches.  So you might be interested in something like this:

Since you've already got a cheap bracelet, this might fit your parameters…

Are those type of models made in Japan, Chris?.. Are cheaper Seikos, for that matter?..

Seiko 5s have a solid reputation for quality, despite being the "value" line from Seiko.  Though from what I can tell, the difference between Seiko 5s and regular Seikos in the same general price range seems to be non-existent.  As for this particular model, I prefer numbers instead of hour markers and I refuse to buy watches without sapphire crystals any more.  I've scratched and gouged up every mineral crystal watch I've ever owned and I'm tired of replacing crystals.  That said, it's a good looking watch.

Plus, at that price, it's hard to go wrong.  If you like it, go ahead and get it.

See this is why I fucking ask you… Cause you bring up the issues I seem to forget about... Sapphire crystals or bust indeed!.. My Weil, despite having been abused, banged against metal and such, for YEARS now, only show slight scuff marks on the dial... Simply amazing...

Chris: if you come across, or know of another simple, classic styled decent watch, just post your links in here... Much obliged...

Seul, I'm sure you could find a metal watch band for this.

I just got one and I fucking love it. They just restocked them after being sold out for 6 months.

I had a sister model of that one for a while, it was a a really nice watch for the money. The bracelet is comfy but it's a hollow link number so it's a bit flimsy feeling. The 5:s are never made in Japan, mainly in Singapore. The movement is a true and tested workhorse, not the most accurate but very reliable. You're looking at about +/- 10-15 seconds a day accuracies, which I think are fairly good - good enough even if you care about that sort of thing. In the sub 100€ range I'd definitely go for that one if it's what you're looking for lookswise.

It's a bit tricky if you want a non-diver automatic with a sapphire crystal in the sub 200-300€ range with a good quality bracelet. And there's a reason why "better" bracelets cost what they cost, solid links and precision engineering comes with a price tag.

                                    AIAN HA-TO!

Sapphire, blue dial, no bullshit, 85 quid. What am I missing… I can live with a shitty bracelet... Made in Singapore?.. Excellent, no objections to that at all!..
