IHSH-397-IND - Sashiko Work Shirt - Indigo
Our classic work shirt, made from a 21oz Jacquard loom woven cloth with Sashiko thread stitching. Dating back to the 17th century, Sashiko is a traditional form of Japanese folk embroidery used for both decorative and functional reinforcement of fabrics. With a translation meaning “little stabs”, the technique involves a running stitch which creates aesthetically pleasing geometric patterns in a piece of cloth, simultaneously reinforcing the weave for added durability.
Where traditionally this would be stitched into a fabric by hand, the complex capabilities of a Jacquard loom allow for a Sashiko-style stitch to be intertwined at the weaving stage. The result is a soft, yet substantial cloth that’s packed full of character, with the intricate Sashiko thread adding delicate flourishes of colour amid the deep indigo weave.
